During this past year in the Development department (3-4 days per week), I mastered Astraea’s procedures for Raiser’s Edge gift and constituent entries, building and pulling queries, creating new campaigns, funds, appeals and events, pulling and writing acknowledgement letters, monthly reporting of donor advised funds, PayPal and fiscal reconciliations, supporting house parties and galas (including look books and event registration), prospect research, as well as gaining experience with spring appeal and annual report mailings. I am grateful to the remaining members of the development team, who supported me to the best of their abilities. Without the guidance of a director of development there was a lack of clarity as to each person’s needs, abilities, responsibilities, and specification around which tasks had been completed and which had not. Challenges arose as the gala prep, annual report, and spring appeal mailings coincided. I put in additional hours, teaching Colleen to pull lists and reports, as I was learning myself.
As my workload expanded dramatically, there was a marked decline in my timeliness. Acquiring new skills increased the time I spent on new tasks, and teaching others new skills and checking/redoing their work also added extra time. Based on the available material, I created a work plan, including video profiles of grantee partners and donors, as well as event videos and videos for tactical times of year (history months, holidays, days of action and visibility, etc.) Bridget and I collaborated on a template for the Astraea Storybank videos; a guide for our general approach to the videos in terms of structure and length, tone and style, and inclusion of b-roll and music. With the addition of Jeanette, we dedicated time to incorporating text within the videos, focusing on content, font, style, size, placement, graphic design, and animation.
Throughout the year, Bridget and I grew more and more in sync. Initially, our collaborative process required serious time and energy on both our parts. There were multiple rounds of feedback for each step: selection of interview content, story structure, selection of b-roll, creation of text and titles, selection of music, etc. As we finalized the videos to use as our templates, and with each subsequent video, I strengthened my confidence and self-sufficiency, making the feedback shorter and
