Pretto, J., et.al. (2013). Reasons for Referral for Pulmonary Function Testing: An Audit of 4 Adult Lung Function Laboratories. Respir Care. 58(3). Pp 507–510. This article emphasizes the importance of the use of PFTs as a tool to evaluate the diagnosis and management of the most respiratory conditions. This study was used to determine the underlying reasons for referring the patient for PFTs. It was observed that the most common reasons for performing PFTs were to follow disease progress or response to current treatment such as asthmatic patients. Ongoing monitoring of lung function is clearly an important part of clinical management and is recommended for management of most common lung diseases.

(2010). PFT/Spirometry: A Most Valuable Tool. The Journal for Respiratory Care Practitioners. Web. file:///C:/Users/user/Downloads/number%206.pdf This article clearly states the importance of PFT or Spirometry as an essential tool for the diagnosis of respiratory conditions. The article emphasizes the importance of spirometry in understanding and diagnosing the most commonly encountered conditions in pulmonary medicine. Other important functions of spirometry is for determining the standard of quality as well as for providing guidelines for practicing respiratory medicine. It can be used to screen the patients and smokers for any respiratory conditions or for determining the at risk group. This is a reliable source that is peer reviewed. It is a highly significant contribution to the research as it helps in qualifying the importance of spirometry in Respiratory care. It is due to the fact that spirometry and PFT are valuable tools in determining and diagnosis of respiratory conditions such as asthmatic patient and COPD. It is also essential in evaluating the results of the treatments and in determining the risk factors.
