Prologue

She nods her head briskly, knowing that this was a dangerous decision. Her husband turns to her with worried eyes, uncertain if this was the right choice.
The male fairy glides forward with the sprite baby in his arms, watching the human couple intently. His pale green eyes match Aster’s, symbolizing the partnership between the two.
The female human carries the child named Eira forward, her bottom lip trembling. She started to question herself, was this right? It was certainly illegal to engage in a Swap.
“You are aware that Eira will become a changeling, correct?” the male fairy states in a firm voice, slightly wavering.

The male fairy, roaring in inexplicable fury, whips the dagger out and slices the man’s back with shocking speed. He cries out, red human blood spattering all over the natural wooden floors of the Swapping hut, hidden by all of Wrephate.
“Look what you did to my gorgeous house,” the fairy spits. “Now everyone must pay the price.”
The woman screams, clutching Aster to her chest, shaking uncontrollably. Her husband was nearly dead, her baby was taken away from her in a regretful Swap, and she could die as well in the arms of an insane fairy.
“Don’t hurt Aster,” she wails. “Hurt me all you want, but don’t hurt her.”
“I had no plans of doing so,” he says, twilring the knife around in his hand, Eira propped expertly in the other. “If you stay quiet, sweetheart, then maybe I’ll live up to my promise.”
Her eyes wander to her husband, now dead, laying on the floor swimming in his own blood. His face is deathly pale and she realizes that she’s never seen a dead body in person before.
“Don’t worry about him,” the fairy says casually, following her gaze. “I’ll take care of him.”
“How can you be so calm about this? You killed my husband!” the woman shouts a few notches higher than
