Assumptions In Critical Thinking

It’s been interesting learning about the reality assumptions especially from a critical thinker point of view. One thing is that everyone has a different assumption that makes us different from one another. What are reality assumptions? The first thing I learned about improving my think is reality assumption is beliefs about what is true and factual about the world, and so they are sometimes called factual assumption or descriptive assumptions. They are based on the unique experiences and education of each individual. A writer or speaker sometimes directly states reality assumptions, but they are usually implied (Diestler 2012). Deductive reasoning is formal patterns are used to reveal the logic of our reasoning. These patterns give us a tool for “quality control” when the correct deductive form is followed, the reasoning is logical and the argument is called valid (Diestler 2012). As a critical thinker you have to start to realize that facts and observations are restricted. Sometimes when looking for evidence you have to be accepting to a certain viewing platform. When it comes to important decision-making the people in our lives’ that we embrace our relationships with. At times we have to questions our thoughts and theirs as well the people we surround ourselves with Do they believe the same beliefs ideas as us as critical thinkers? Also another important fact is about inductive reasoning and deductive reasoning which help determine the truth. Inductive reason the process of finding the truth by making observation; these observations may be from statistical polling controlled experiments or relevant examples and analogies (Diestler 2012). Deductive reasoning is the process of interring a conclusion by putting forth true premises in a valid format. So in other words deductive reasoning is designed in a way to give an assurance about what can be factual in a certain circumstances. His method identifies claims (which are the same as conclusions), reasons, those supports for the claims that are directly stated, and warrants, those connections between reasons and claims that are directly stated, and warrants those connections between reasons and claims are taken for granted the reality assumptions (Diestler 2012). So Toulmin’s method is basically a piecing together the explanations and conclusions of the arguments. Also a great demonstrating about stereotyping was the YouTube video that was presented in lecture. Stereotyping is classifying people places or things solely on common traits while ignoring individual differences that make these comparisons invalid (Diestler 2012). So for example if stereotype other people we start to categorize them in a different criteria that maybe honest which implies to be deductive
