2.1 Children can develop vocabulary through picture book reading
The primary way to develop vocabulary is through reading. When I was young, I was taught to look up words, copy their definitions from the dictionary and then memorize them. Teachers have dictation assessment regularly to check our words spelling. I do not want to teach vocabulary in this passive way as passive learners lack motivation to learn. Passive learners perceive learning, especially learning a foreign language, to be torturous. By reading picture books, children construct their knowledge by both visual and verbal. Children do not need to look up all the unfamiliar words because they can guess the meanings by reading pictures. The process of explaining the new words using their own language is a positive development of vocabulary.

I organized a vocabulary assessment which all 16 students attended. The students had to complete sentences with the given words and match each words with its definition. All of these words were from the picture books we had read. To my surprise, half of the students failed in the assessment. This significant discovery makes me aware that some of the children are entirely dependent on pictures for comprehension when they read a book. Picture books have been around for a long time. They have been read by many generations as a source of pleasure reading and to tap into their imagination. In these books, the writers and illustrator include various language, narrative and visual conventions to appeal to the reader and make them read with a deeper analytical eye to find the intended meaning. While some picture books are simple and the meaning is straightforward others are more complex and metaphorical. An example of such a picture book is Gary Crew and Steven Woolman’s…

Developing Reading Proficiency In the article Children Teach Themselves to Read, Peter Gray offers a perspective on how and when your children should be taught to read. Or, rather, why your children shouldn’t be taught to read. Unfortunately, many schools are still convinced that children should be inundated with methods like phonics so every child in one grade can be on the same level. The underlying problem with this is that children are individuals; different methods of learning work for different children.…

I think it is so important to help students make connections between what they have previously learned in order to build and grow their vocabulary. The kids are making important connections in order to become fluent readers. I think that this is the strategy I see kids using the most. I even introduce this strategy when I see students struggling with a word. It is just easier to break something down instead of trying to understand as a whole.…

"Using picture books can motivate reluctant readers to read and find reading enjoyable, therefore increasing time spent reading" is such a true statement (Massey, 2015). My daughter is not a fan of reading and has always put up an argument when she is asked to read her daily 20 minutes. We have tried everything from Judy Blume to Laura Ingalls Wilder, but nothing has seemed to motivate her to read until we discovered DC Superhero Girls. DC Superhero Girls is a picture/comic book that has transformed my little nonreader to someone who reads every time she has a break. I definitely will be hitting the store for more books of this genre.…

Sometimes, we forget the importance or purpose of pictures that can also be referred to as illustrations. I feel that a Wordless Book activity would be a great example of teaching students the importance of using pictures to help them in the reading process. One of the skills that a good reader possess is having the ability to use Picture Clues to learn what a reading passage is about.…
