My participation in the Associated Student Body Class, my involvement in my community service organization and my ex-president role in the Architecture club has enabled me to create my interpretation and understanding of diversity. Through my various leadership engagements, I have interacted with peers from different backgrounds and obtained the opportunity to learn new traditions and cultures as well as share my culture to people. I have become aware that a diverse environment is important for the entrance of distinct ideas and skills. I define diversity as the composite gathering of multiple unique and different backgrounds that expands a person accustom view and motivates the person to learn unfamiliar differences. My participation in these …show more content…
Every morning, as I waited at the bus stop for the line 206 bus on Century and Normandie Boulevard, I would witness trash abound. As a conscious resident of my community, I wanted to enhance my community's image and help ease some of the struggles that belittled my neighborhood. My neglected community is identified as an infamous, dangerous place, for it houses the unbearable stench of marijuana and infestation of gang activity. The frequent violence is conveyed by the presence of police sirens, and the thump of the helicopter that strike fear and paranoia into my neighborhood. I felt the responsibility to assist and resolve some of the daunting burdens that drag down my community so I initiated my organization by contacting my friends to see if they were willing to work with me; many of them were highly interested. Despite the positive feedbacks I received, I encountered a person who told me that nobody would be interested to join our seemingly hopeless group; I became determined to refute this …show more content…

Diversity is being surrounded by people of different backgrounds and learning from their unique experiences and connecting with them. As a Resident Advisor I will develop a diverse and inclusive floor by promoting awareness of the vast number of different cultures and backgrounds present not only on the floor but in the building as well. I would also make it a point to ensure that every voice on the floor carries the same weight; even if their voice and opinion is in the minority, I want them to know that not being in the majority does not means that they are wrong. Furthermore, I want to bring in a speaker from the Multicultural Centre to discuss the social customs of a culture that is underrepresented. I would also take them to guest speakers…

Diversity is a key element for a proper learning environment; students must be amongst people of other backgrounds to be exposed to the variation in the real world. In the scientific community, collaboration with others is necessary, and often, they come from an alternate way of life. Working with someone who may be different in many ways has numerous benefits; they may be able to propose ideas that you had not previously considered, or they could inform you of something that has the potential to assist you later in life. Living in a diverse setting not only an educational benefit, but it also aids in the preparation for the real world. Diversity is not just age, gender, race. it is much more complicated that we can imagine. In my opinion diversity is about our connectedness and our interactions where the lines cross. Diversity is a connection between our professional life and personal life and the framework for interrelationships between people. Cultural Diversity Macleod

Summary: Macleod shared the importance of human rights and cultural diversity. He argues that a reasonably comprehensive doctrine of universal human rights can be squared with what is known about the diversity of cultural beliefs and practices. Also, he developed the normatively persuasive arguments for human rights. Relevance to Research Question: Although the article wasn't as much explicit, it was very helpful to me because it provides a clear statement of human rights and cultural diversity. Macleod develops a discussion of cultural diversity in the sphere of human rights to a level that is deeper than that which is allowed for by the usual and verbal opposition between "universalism" and "cultural diversity."…

From attending a high school with over 4,000 students to attending a university with tens of thousand of students, and I’ve learned that there is always something new that you can learn from people. Everyone thinks differently, and everyone has something to offer to one another. People always say think outside the box, not to be narrow-minded, but to be able to imagine what’s outside the box you need the ability to think differently. And the only way to think differently is to be exposed to the different ways that people perceive the world. A commitment to diversity means always to strive to view the world in numerous ways, to never assume something because you can't think differently, and to always try to expose yourself to all the different people that surround us.…

Awarded to students who show commitment to both academics and diversity by excelling in the field of academia and making a positive impact in their communities. This positive impact is what John Quincy Adams meant when he said, “if your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.” This is critical to the mission of Semester at Sea through the context of global understanding. I have exemplified leadership through the advocacy for equity and access by contributing to those around me.…

In Student Affairs we can challenge students to think creatively, speak boldly, and lead fiercely in their college careers. Students attend college to gain knowledge and learn at a higher level of thinking, to me that means we must challenge them to adapt and learn more about themselves, the world they live in, and how they would like to fit into the world around them. This concept is greatly encouraged by the Social Change Model of Leadership Development, a framework that encourages students to learn about integrity, authenticity, inclusion, meaning making and collaboration (Komives, 2011). As Student Affairs professionals, we can provide students with leadership experience and challenge their developmental growth through leadership, teaching students that leadership is not only about holding a position but rather the behaviors of working towards shared goals and ideals (Komives,…

Diversity is defined as variety, especially the inclusion of people of different race or culture, which happens to be the focus of most diversity initiatives. Diversity in the workplace began in the United States after the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act when the US American industry began to see new categories of workers such as women and those with disabilities. In today’s world, the United States is considered a “melting pot” of ethnic cultures. Due to globalization, diversity has become a huge part of the workplace and therefore it is important for organizations to focus on trying to find ways to deal with having a diverse workforce. As quoted in the article Reflections on Diversity and Organizational development “diversity is an essential…

I was fortunate enough to attend the 2016 H. W. Sumners Leadership Conference where I would have the opportunity to meet a unique pool of influential individuals. Most of my leadership experiences had come from group projects with students who I were familiar with, and the conference gave me the chance to become a team with strangers from across the United States and Mexico. I was not aware of how much I was actually going to get out of the conference. Through the elective workshops, I learned much more about my leadership style and who I could become as a leader. Through the speakers, I learned about the power of creating a vision and pursuing with unyielding faith.…
