After reading the article ‘The Lessons of Classroom 506’ by Lisa Belkin, I realized the importance of inclusion in our society. After seeing the efforts put in by Thomas’ parents to create a classroom with suitable conditions for Thomas, I feel like it important to start including people at a younger age, and this starts by good education and teachings in school. Being able to include people with disabilities at a much younger age will help society think no different about these people. Therefore, I feel like the experiment Thomas’ parents tried did a good job of teaching people to cope with and support one another regardless of the condition an individual had. Another thing I found interesting was the role technology played in helping people…

What Technology Doesn’t Want You to Know Technology, in today’s society, has hindered man’s ability to function properly and maintain one’s independence. Although advances in technology are beneficial in making daily life easier, it will eventually cause society to be incapable of accomplishing even the simplest of tasks. This creates a sense of powerlessness that prevents individuals from being able to live without the luxury of technology. In Ray Bradbury’s story “The Veldt,” he warns society about the dangers that advancing technology can have on one’s independence through his use of figurative language. Technological advances have become an essential part of society that has an influence in everyone’s lives, but especially in the lives of children.…

When I visited The Joseph Sam’s School, I learned the methods the professors use for educational training as well as speech and language therapy. There they serve children from birth through twenty-two years of age who have physical and intellectual disabilities. Also, they work with therapists and physicians to provide the best comprehensive programs for its students. I was surprised to see the technology that they use, for instance, I noticed how children learn to interact using tablets for an easy communication. They also use art and music as another method to enhance the cognitive ability, communication, physical coordination, attention, and visual perception skills.…

What I got from reading these books are how to pay attention to what really matters, how to change, how to love a person with disability. The presentation by William Conley brought me to tears listening to his life story on what he had gone through as a result of his disability to the extent on medical doctors experimenting his body. I was moved by what I hear and how far society is changing and embracing people with disability.…
