Assistive Technology For Students With Disabilities

The readings this week further expand on assistive technology and its ability to maximize access and learning for the student with learning disabilities. We read about Gareth’s Story, and how he had opportunities for intervention and assistive technology simply because of the time in which he was born. Children born after the IDEA, The Tech Act of 1988, and Reauthorization of IDEA 1997, were afforded the opportunity for testing, intervention, placement in the general education classroom, least restrictive environment and assistive technology. All of the components are spelled out in the individual education program (IEP). In summary of this eight-week class, I think the key points are the collaboration of the IEP team when planning for the student with disabilities. …show more content…
In addition, continued dialogue and assessment of the student and the use of technology and other modifications is important to developing success and independence for the student. I started this class with very little knowledge of assistive technology; and also with little knowledge of the law as it regards to assistive technology. I am confident as I continue in my capacity as a special education teacher and part of the IEP team, that I can be a more educated, contributing member of the team in regards to assistive technology. For example, I can now initiate a conversation about assistive technology tool for a students and also discuss and assessment plan to identify the need and the appropriate
