Should Physician Assisted Suicide Be Illegal Essay

Assisted suicide is a trap that America is falling into. Many people who use assisted suicide to die do so because they feel they are not perfect. This idea is a serious problem that many people refuse to acknowledge today. Though many people feel assisted suicide should be legal, I believe assisted suicide should not be legal because in most cases the patient isn’t feeling any physical pain, it doesn’t take into account people who cannot speak for themselves, and it goes against American ideals.
Physician assisted suicide can be classified between euthanasia, and assisted suicide. Euthanasia is the process of painlessly helping a terminally ill person to die. With physician assisted suicide the patient is in complete control of their own death. In other words, the patient decides their own fate. We are a progressive nation with some of the best healthcare in the world. Scientists in cancer research receive funding based on how much money the illness is costing insurance companies and how many people it affects. If we continue to choose to simply die if we have cancer we will never find a cure (Clair). I don’t see how we can permit the use of drugs to kill someone who has simply given up hope instead of helping them. In Oregon, a cancer victim Randy Stroup received a letter from the state saying it would pay for his assisted suicide but not for his chemotherapy (Clair). If we support the use of physician assisted suicide to save some money over saving a life I cannot see how we can progress at all.
Assisted suicide and euthanasia should not be permitted to occur in America or anywhere. The people who want this make the argument that we need it to stop the pain, but the patients don’t feel pain. The people it affects the most the disabled and the elderly don’t have a say in the decision for assisted suicide, in addition it is
