An old woman is lying in a hospital bed, eyes shut, with five different machines hooked up to her. At this moment, those machines are the only thing keeping this woman alive. The family can’t let her go, but what’s best for the old woman? Euthanasia, or assisted suicide, is when one purposely ends a patient’s life in order to relieve suffering. For a lot of people this makes sense. However, others may see it as irrational and not right. Physician-Assisted suicide should be legal, it is a freedom of choice, it improves the respect for life, and it is a doctor’s duty to take care of their patients, no matter the situation. First off, the family members of a dying patient have freedom of choosing the ultimate say-so in what happens to that patient. According to Rita Marker, the Executive Director from the International Task Force on Euthanasia and Assisted Suicide, “Laws against euthanasia and assisted suicide are in place to prevent abuse and to protect people from unscrupulous doctors and others” (ProCon 1). Although this makes sense, what about all these people lying in hospital beds dying, wishing for it to just be over? These laws are protecting bad from happening, but at the same time, it’s hurting the innocent.
