Imagine that you get a phone call at seven one morning from the nursing home saying that your great grandmother, grandma, or mom, was going to be passing away within a few hours. You sit there with her and see how much pain she looks like she is in. Three hours pass, and nothing has changed except that her breathing starts to stop every now and then. The staff gives her morphine periodically to help ease the pain, but you can tell that she is still in pain. The thought crosses your mind that if they know that she is going to die that day, why can’t they just end her suffering early? Assisted suicide is defined in the Merriam-Webster dictionary as the suicide of a patient suffering from an incurable disease, affected by the taking of lethal drugs provided by a doctor for this purpose. Assisted suicide should be legal for certain situations including incurable diseases and only living because of a machine. Assisted suicide should be legal because if you have the choice to kill a ‘baby’ in your stomach who has no say in the matter, then why can a person who can comprehend the situation not be able to make the decision for themselves? There are many different views from different disciplines on physician-assisted suicide and if it is actually morally and ethically okay to do. A couple concepts that support physician-assisted suicide are the Doctrine of Double Effect, coming from the medical discipline, and Death with Dignity, coming from the religious disciplines.
