As I sat in that little hospital room painted in an overwhelming color of eggshell white, time seemed to stop. I could hear his sharp breathing and the steady beeps from the machine, as my uncle’s heart beated on. He laid there in that bed motionless, it almost seemed cruel to keep him there. After nearly a month of no improvements and the doctor’s note that he would never be normal again, my family decided to make that heart-wrenching decision to pull the plug. Assisted suicide has been a long disputed territory because of these controversial processes. Many argue otherwise stating that assisted suicide is murder and will lead to mass numbers of unethical killing. Through thousands of years of biological evolution, the human body has developed natural processes which supplement death to create a relatively painless death (Choice in Dying). Through animal studies, the data indicates that the body has created a natural response to the lack of food by an increased production of endorphins, creating a feeling of euphoria on the death bed (Choice in Dying). With the supplemented food from feeding tubes, this natural pain relief is lost. Furthermore, when a body goes into a coma, it is a natural signal of death. The inaction and unresponsiveness is a way of providing natural anesthesia for people (Choice in Dying). However, the use of artificial nutrition and hydration also inhibits this pain reliever, creating an uncomfortable death (Choice in Dying). By choosing a natural death, patients can follow the natural, gentle way of death that had been practiced before the introduction of the painful end-of-life
