Assisted Living Vs Nursing Home Essay

As people age and start to show limitations in their ADLs, some may have to consider moving into a place not their own, to have the care that they may need, that they currently don’t have in their homes or families who cannot take the responsibility because a professional may be needed. The two main common types of places older people can reside in are nursing homes or assisted living facilities. Both of these residencies have their own types of services, but they also share some common characteristics. First, you may want to understand the definition of a Nursing home and Assisted Living facility. Nursing Homes are a facility staffed by health professionals 24 hours a day that provide services to residents who can’t stay at home because of disabilities, chronic disease, or cognitive impairments. Assisted Living Facilities are places where elders can live who need assistance with taking medications and personal care, but don’t need 24 hour care (Hooyman & Kiyak). In nursing homes, they include usually over 100 beds, almost 90% of the residents are age 65 and older, more female residents than males, and just over half of the residents need help with five or more ADLs. Services that are needed for most residents who reside in nursing homes include residents with hallucinations, severe ADL limitations, incontinence, and impaired communication. In assisted living facilities they usually include full bathroom, small kitchen, bedroom, and sitting room.
