“The best classroom in the world is at the feet of an elderly person.” I found much greater significance to this quote by Andy Rooney after volunteering at Morning Pointe through the United Way’s Volunteer Center. Through this experience, I was offered one-on-one/small group time with seniors in an assisted living facility in Chattanooga. This opportunity was a deep and meaningful one to me; I was able to converse with people who possessed an abundance of life experience and wisdom and brighten their day in the process.
Assisted living facilities are the fastest growing long-term care resource for senior citizens because of their modern approach to senior care. Unfortunately, elderly citizens face a difficult situation regarding their living situation; as their mobility and physical abilities decrease, the cost of living in America increases. It can be problematic to find affordable residences that satisfy their physical needs. Thus, assisted living facilities are on the rise. Volunteering at a place such as The Lantern at Morning Pointe appeals to me because I feel strongly about the rights of senior citizens, and I sympathize with those senior citizens who are lonely. When my group arrived at the facility, however, there had been a miscommunication about times and the activities director told us that she had nothing for us to do. Disappointed, we trekked back to the car to go home. Before we left, though, we saw another assisted living facility in walking distance where we were told we were not allowed to volunteer without a background check and the appropriate shots. I was stunned at the difficulty we faced in simply trying to visit with senior citizens for a couple of
