How to Do a Chin Up- An Intermediate Guide
By Callie Durbrow

Chin ups are one of the best upper body exercises because they are excellent for promoting fat loss and they tax the muscular system and burn a large amount of calories.

Many people (especially women) shy away from chin ups because they seem very daunting. Most people simply need a starting point and a way to progress without getting frustrated.

In part one of this series I discussed the most effective way to begin a chin up strength program. Once you have progressed through your inverted row series and are able to perform 3 sets of several repetitions either with your feet on the floor or on a bench, you should progress to the next step.

Assisted Chin Ups:

Many fitness facilities and gyms have a nautilus machine called the assisted chin up. This is not what you will use when you perform assisted chin ups. I do not recommend these machines because it is difficult to get a full range of motion and really use the muscles you are trying to activate.

For a proper assisted chin up you will need a thick stretch band or the assistance of a friend or a personal trainer to hold your legs. If you are using another person, bend your knees when you are hanging on the bar and have them place their hands under your shins for assistance.

For this article I will assume that you are using a stretch band because this is the most effective. Using a fitness trainer or a friend can also help but the manual assistance is hard to judge. Follow these steps for a killer upper body workout and one of the best fat burning exercises.

o Place a jump stretch band over the top of a chin up bar or the top bar of a squat rack.

o Slide it through to make a knot and let the rest hang down.

o Grasp the bar with a shoulder width grip and palms facing

The clean and jerk is an interesting lift to perform, because it incorporates a full body exercise into one explosive movement. When the clean and jerk is properly performed, it combines a deadlift, upright row, front squat and a push press all into one quick movement. The lift was initially implemented as one of the original lifts in Olympic weightlifting competitions, normally performed after an athlete clears the snatch lift. When setting up to perform this lift you will need to be on a level surface with rubber mats, as the weight might be dropped, and for grip. The equipment involved will include a barbell, different amounts of weighted plates, and safety clips for the barbell.…

Improving Core Strength By Morgan F Turley May 17, 2012 Athletes, bodybuilders, or anyone else looking to get stronger or better physically fit, share a common need in their goal: the necessity of a strong "core," essentially, the muscles of the abdomen and chest. This part of the body is known as the core because it is both at roughly the center of the body, but also because every athletic movement begins with these muscle groups. In short, to become a better competitor, or a more physically capable person, one must have an extremely strong core. The biggest arms and legs and necks in the world will be close to worthless without a group of core muscles to match.…

Elevated Push-ups are a great way to strengthen the upper body and arms. Start with your hands elevated on the back of a bench (about hip height) and lower your chest to the bench by bending the elbows, then straighten them (push) to return. Make sure you’re lowering your whole body and not just bending your back. Once you can comfortably do 5 push-ups at that level then you’re ready to try the next height down. Requirements: A bench, picnic table, wall, outdoor exercise equipment or anything stable that’s at a height that suits you.…
