Upon arriving at the art museum, a giant, electric blue rope greets me at the entrance. The artwork surprises me since I did not expect to see such thing in a small museum. The rope comes out of from between a woman’s tattooed that stick out from a hole in the wall. It continuously extends from there and intertwines through bright white pillars on the ground level. The Lansdowne Sculptures at The San Antonio Museum of Arts Marcus Aurelius was an aristocrat born in Rome in 121 CE. He ruled as Emperor from 161 to 180, most of those years along side a co-emperor, and was an accomplished warrior as well as a Stoic philosopher, which teaches that to be wise and intelligent one must not allow negative emotions to run rampant no matter what the circumstances may be. Which is why when someone suppresses their emotion today we say they are “Stoic”. This beautiful depiction of Marcus Aurelius’ as a young Roman soldier stands 7'11" tall and is carved out of white marble. Throughout ancient Egyptian history, art and culture remained constant to support the idea of “order over chaos.” However, in the mid-14th century BCE a revolution occurred in Egyptian society, culture, and religion, consequently causing a brief transformation in Egyptian art. These changes can be detected in the Relief of Princess with an Earring. This sculpture was made in the 18th Dynasty (1353-1336 BCE), during the reign of Akhenaten. Although only a portion of the limestone relief is displayed in the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archeology, the sculpture still demonstrates the attributes that are found in art from Amarna Period.…
Looking at sculptures and paintings in person or in a museum rather than looking at them on a flat screen can drastically change the way you take in the artwork in many different ways. One good example is the Ladder for Booker T. Washington by Martin Puryear, which, in person, was vastly larger than I expected. When looking at an artwork in the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, you get to observe details and witness different focal points that you would most likely miss looking at a computer. In Mart Puryear’s artwork, size, focal point, and surroundings can be wildly miscommunicated through a photograph. Size is a very important aspect in Ladder for Booker T. Washington, which is why I was astonished on how large the artwork was in person, compared to images that I’ve seen online.…
History of Art During my visit at Heckscher Museum of Art in Huntington, I came across several modern and contemporary artists. At the time of my visit the museum displayed different pieces created by women artists, they called this, “You Go Girl!” exhibit. ‘The Mouth Holds the Tongue’ is an instillation piece designed and built by Lili Huston-Herterich, Laurie Kang and Nadia Belerique and installed at The Power Plant in Toronto, Ontario. The design of the piece is based structurally on the Sonsbeek Pavilion in Arnhem which was designed by Aldo van Eyck, who championed the structuralist architectural movement. The Toronto based trio of Kang, Belerique, Huston-Herterich have taken their own interpretation guided by there respective mediums; Belerique and Huston-Herterich in instillation, Kang in sculpture, and repurposed the pavilion concept to reflect their own values related to form. Artwork offers a visual insight into the culture in the Americas during the time of colonization. The casta paintings provide the best evidence to represent the melting pot of human cultures in the Americas during the early days of settlement. The 15th panel in the 1763 Caste Painting Series by Miguel Cabrera; De Mestizo y d 'India is an oil on canvas painting which depicts a mixed race family; a Mestizo man, an Indian woman and their two children, whom the caste system labels as “Coyotes”. According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, the Spanish word “mestizo” refers to a man of European and Native American origin. Cabrera’s casta painting collection emphasizes the cultural and social differences present in Mexico during the colonial period.…

I put the pieces aside, hoping they would harden so by the end I could put the pieces together. I went on with the recipe poaching my pear and helping my team members when I had down time waiting for my own dish. Time went by incredibly fast because it was already the last ten minutes of competition. I started to slightly panic when I checked on my sugar sculpture pieces, and they hadn’t hardened in enough time to even be made into a sculpture. This paper analyzes two sculptures; Agora in Grant Park, Chicago and the Dying Niobide in Palazzo Missimo, Rome. Agora in Grant Park, Chicago Grant Park is no doubt a landmark feature in Chicago. At the park’s southwesterly parts stands the Agora sculpture. It is not only a recent addition in the park but it also stands out among the installations at the park. Its height makes it easy to see from most points within the park.…
At first glance, the Hercules and the Hydra sculpture is easy to pass by. Located in the outside sculpture garden it stands on a slightly elevated bronze platform, which stands on a bigger, more elevated concrete pedestal that also rests on a larger concrete pedestal that has four embedded lights, each on one corner. The viewing area is large and allows for the audience to view the sculpture up close and far, while still being able circumambulate around the statue at a variety of distances. Because of the vastness of the space around the sculpture, at first glance from the walkway, the sculpture does not seem to be a big piece. Finial, a gilt bronze ornament created in the 18th century and currently displayed in the Arts of Asia department, has a two visual elements, shape and space. This art piece has organic shape where there is the wavy form of water and bodies of two fish. These two organic shapes contribute to the piece as they exist in the same environment. In Buddhism art, fish in water represent happiness because they are free to swim in the water. Banksy was known as king of graffiti, british artist, painter and as well as a filmmaker with a unknown identity (“The Story Behind Banksy”). The names Robin Gunningham and Robert Banks are often used unknowingly to give an identity to Banksy (“Banksy Biography”). The true identity still to this day is uncertain. Banksy began his career in the early 90’s with a graffiti crew in Bristol called DryBreadZ (“Banksy Biography”). Banksy’s work was considered vandalism by law and critics but, it is meaningful art that portrays a powerful but, straightforward message.…
Although that is all the information that has been given about the mediums used, looking closely at this work it appears a crayon or oil pastel type of media has also been used to form some of the lines within the skull, such as the large black geometric line work almost forming a misshapen cube, the outline to create the teeth of the skull and also the random rapid scribbles that are see on the bottom right hand corner of the canvas. An oil pastel is pigment set into wax, it is a soft wax medium that does not dry. A crayon on the other hand is very similar, but the wax that the pigment is set into is harder, prohibiting the pigment of the crayon somewhat but allowing it to be a dry medium. The tell-tale sign of an oil pastel or crayon is the waxy, rough and broken style of the lines where the pigment of the media is picked up on the raised texture and missed in the minute indents of the canvas, creating a broken look to the…
