Reading Assignment 4

As I get older, it has sometimes been frustrating not to recall information. On many occasions, I find myself not remembering when I go from one room to another why I actual came into that room. In order to be more productive and less frustrated, writing list to remember things has been very beneficial. At other times, I have posted notes on my cell phone calendar, so that I get a reminder of things I need to remember. Also, using Post It notes on the bathroom mirror, the refrigerator, or even the car dashboards comes in handy.

In the past year, my family has observed on many occasion abnormal forgetting the first hand from my mother, who is dealing with memory loss issues. Even though, she has cooked enormous amount of meals over the years for her family, she is no longer able to prepare the simplest recipe. In a two bathroom house where she has resided for over forty years, she can’t remember where to find either one of them. After visiting her daughter who lives across the street, she can’t safely walk back home on her own.
The article, “Intellectual Versus Wisdom-Related Knowledge: The Case For A Different
Kind Of Learning In The Later Years Of Life”, enlightens us on which is more vital to the elderly intellectual or wisdom-related knowledge. Ardelt states that in the early years the educational goals are mastery, but as we age the educational goals should be wisdom. Her article breaks down the traits of intellectual and wisdom-related knowledge into six groups; “goals, approach, range, acquisition, effects on the knower and relationship to aging.” (p773).
