Assignment 3: Patriarchy Bingo

Improved Essays
Exercise #3: Patriarchy BINGO For B1 the example that I found came from a magazine that I receive every month it was basically an advertisement for a pair of heels by a brand called Stuart Weitzman. The image is of three young models who are naked promoting heels. The models are covering each other's private parts with each others body. Meaning that they are standing in a certain angle covering themselves with each other arms (hugging), because they are hugging themselves. It is an example of gender act on the BINGO board, because the act is promoting a non-sexual product by sexualizing women in the form that all three of the young models are naked only wearing those shoes. There are different ways of promoting shoes, but having naked models …show more content…
What I read was that the offender Brock Turner, was released from jail after only serving three months in jail for sexual assault. This is an example or gender act on the BINGO board, because Brock Turner was released three months early, and given a lighter sentence for sexual assault. This is not only a gender problem but a race problem as well, because given that he is a white and was attending an Ivy league in which he played a sport for. His crime was made seem like a mistake and not seen as serious problem, because he was good student who made a mistake but raping someone isn’t a mistake. For G1 an activity that I found was the distinction that there is between the NBA and WNBA. I noticed this awhile I go on my own while I was watching the NBA Finals in June, and a commercial came on about WNBA league. This a good example of a gender act, because it is making a clear distinction between the leagues because the NBA is not called National Men Basketball Association but for the women it is called Women's National Basketball Association. For me at least it is creating an image that men sports are better, and making it seem like women sports aren’t as important or interesting because even ticket prices for both leagues are different. For the women league tickets are cheaper but for the men league tickets are more expensive and difficult to attain, because everyone wants to …show more content…
I also learned that society has a way of making a clear distinction between male and women activities. Making male activities more attractive than women activities even though they are both the same the only difference is the gender. Even when applying laws males especially those of a certain race (white) and from a high class are left of the hook easily for their crimes against women. It’s like harder to get a fair sentence specially those involving rape or violence against women. I do feel like items on column O were a bit more harder to find, because men are hardly ever thought as being victims of our society. Even then some of the things men do just like talking about women bad, or sexually is seen acceptable by our society but if the gender were to be switched it would be looked as bad. I feel like gender is still an issue in society, because men are always portrayed as better than women when it comes to sports, politics, and a wage gap. It’s like male labor is seen as more important in society than women labor or accomplishments. A lot of it has to do with our sources of social media, because men are always portrayed as having a certain roles and in some senses are talked about nicer. Women on the other hand if you are sexually attractive or beautiful than you aren’t really talked about in media. Male’s definitely have more power still

The textbook gives great examples of the history of the United States and some of the ways the CJS has criminalized specific identity groups. One example that stood out to me was slavery. Obviously, blacks were deprived of every right and were treated as property but what I did not know is that politicians used the CJS to keep freed-slaves as a type of property even after the Civil War. With slavery over, the CJS had stricter guidelines for freed-slaves and when they were caught breaking those guidelines that others did not have to abide by, they were imprisoned to leased out to farmers who used them to work. As clever as that was, it is apparent the ethical dilemmas it created.…

“The Case Against Single-Sex Classrooms,” by Margaret Talbot, “The War Against Boys,” by Christina Hoff Sommers, and “Men Are From Earth, and So Are Women: It’s Faulty Research That Sets Them Apart,” by Rosalind C. Barnett and Caryl Rivers, have their opinion on men and have shown what they are. What I came to notice the most after reading these interesting articles is that why a lot of women are standing up and expressing these ideas to the world is because they want to make a change in the way the world sees women from men. This change is being processed slowly but it is not up to what women believe is fair. Talbot’s essay was one that caught my attention, especially towards the end of the article. At the start she talks about how a situation…

For the Sake of Womankind Gender roles have changed throughout the course of history, yet the struggle for true equality amongst men and women still prevails. Women continue to be viewed as the minority group, where being born a girl automatically lowers her social standard. This social standard dictates how she is respected, how she is viewed, and what opportunities she is given. Efforts have been and are made to blur the distinction between being a male or a female, but the amount of progress is not enough to say that both genders are equal. Some people may say otherwise, but as a whole, women will never be the equivalent of man in the eyes of American society.…

Growing up, I never felt segregated based on my gender. I was always treated the same and given the same options as the boys were. It wasn’t until later in high school and college where I started noticing gender differences within society. The “glass ceiling” was clearly evident in the business world, but I’m not fully exposed to that, being that I’m still in school. The history of gender inequality, on the other hand, was something I was completely unfamiliar with.…

Because advertisers promote male sports, people are willing to pay for NBA tickets which are sold for $10-120 unlike the “WNBA” tickets sold for $10-35 a seat in women’s basketball unlike (Female Athletes Salaries 1). Men receive so much money from sponsors unlike women. Is this because of their talent, or the sponsor’s ability to promote the team or athlete? It is known that men’s sports in general bring in higher ratings than women’s sports, because they are not televised as much. On the other hand, sports enthusiasts are just as responsible for the higher television ratings for men over women.…

An aspect of patriarchy that still exists in today’s culture would have to be on female sexuality. For example, the male and female double standard and how that affects the amount of sexual partners a female has. Also, how badly women get looked upon when they cheat on their significant other. Female sexuality is an aspect of patriarchy that still exists because there is a double standard in our society when it comes to having sexual orientation. For instance, Zhana Vrangalova PhD who has a PhD in Developmental Psychology and is currently a professor at the NYU Psychology department, stated within her article on sexual double standard that women are judged more harshly than men for engaging in the same behaviors, especially when those behaviors…

Yes the WNBA is the female counter part, but the league is tiny compared to the NBA. The WNBA cannot afford to pay its athletes like the NBA does because it does not produce the revenue or have the exposure the NBA has. The WNBA and NBA cannot be compared because the two don’t even run during the same season. When the WNBA was in the beginning stages of the league the NBA officials felt their WNBA counterpart was unable to share the arena with the team since it would put two basketball teams in one arena (Leslie). Unfortunately this argument seems to be a failure since many NBA teams have shared their arenas with NHL teams whose season runs at the same time as the NBA.…

If television stations aired more women’s sports, they would generate enough to fans to raise more money and receive high paychecks. Men sports teams are considered to be more popular and more exciting than women’s sports. If women’s sports were aired on the radio and television shows as often as men’s, they would have a chance to make more money. Looking back on my life as a whole, I can see now that I did not have many influences that swayed me to seeing gender and sex as two very different categories as many do. I believe that media and religion is the strongest influence to the many people that believe women are meant for the kitchen and men are meant to never cry. Because I was not exposed to the media or religion a lot as a kid, I believe gender stereotypes have had less of an effect on me. When I got to the age that I was the most impressionable, my adolescence, I was involved in the parts of media that were aware of how society sees gender. Now, as an adult, I feel that I am aware of when the media and the news is being sexist.…
