In the United States, a large number of people rely heavily on a federally provided healthcare system of insurance coverage known as Medicare. This program is available for people with disabilities as well as those of age sixty-five and up, with the huge majority of those enrolled in the program being part of the latter group. This means that a lot of the United States’ aging population is very dependent on this federal program as their main source of healthcare coverage. This reliance is particularly high for low-income older Americans who can’t afford more comprehensive insurance.…

The chance that a senior will require long-term care depends on a number of factors, but there are several common denominators. More women will require long-term care than men. This is not because men are in better health, but because most women will live an additional five to seven years beyond their male counterparts.…

According to the World Health Organization, the number of people aged 60 years or older will rise from 900 million to 2 billion between 2015 and 2050. This means that the number of elderly people in the world’s population will move from 12% to 22%. As we age, we gain the privilege of many years of experience and the wisdom that follows it at the cost of time and youth. Often this creates a rise in income and the potential to retire, although aging also comes with several drawbacks. Among these drawbacks include the loss of physical strength, coordination, fluid memory and community status at retirement.…

Notions of ‘active ageing’ come into composition with an emphasis placed on individuals, who from the biomedical perspective are viewed as “frail and disabled people in need of care”, “to realise their prospective for physical, social and psychological well-being throughout the life course” (Clarke and Warren, 2007, p. 477). The notion of the word ‘active’ is not anticipated to denote an older person’s capacity to be “physically active or to participate in the labour force, but to participate in society according to his or her needs, desires and capabilities” (Clarke and Warren, 2007, p. 477). Walker (2006) as citied in Clarke and Warren (2007, p. 466) has criticised the notion of ‘active ageing’ as narrowly focusing on older people’s involvement in the labour market; it was further noted that for effective ‘active ageing’ to take place a life-course approach was required that accounted for views that differentiated from neo-liberal accounts of ageing. There is a necessity to understand and acknowledge activity that looks outside financal, employment and physical capabilities to examine other ways in which older people can ‘actively age’ (Clarke and Warren, 2007, p. 483). The focus needs to be shifted away from this way of…

This presentation really helped me remind myself that I need to slow down and think about what I am saying especially as a future educator. On mn.gov, there is a power-point called Parallels in Time “A History of Developmental Disabilities”. The power-point consist of 7 sections which are titled: Ancient Era (1500 B.C.- 475 A.D), The Middle Ages, Renaissance & Reformation (476 A.D – 1500 A.D), 17th and 18th Centuries, The Rise of the Institution (1800-1950), The Reawakening (1950 – 1980), The Independent Living Movement (1970 – Present), and The Self- Advocacy Movement (1980 – Present). Within each sections there are either subsections, which break down the years into smaller years or there are summaries. Each of these sections or subsection relate to people with disability experience throughout time in a cronical time period. The first section began in the year 1500 B.C, when society began to perceive people with disabilities in a negative way because they could not explain natural phenomenons.…

What are the strengths & needs of this population? There are three developmental sub-periods in late adulthood including the young-old, middle-old, and old-old. Members from each cohort experience different challenges and exhibit strengths throughout this developmental period. The aging process and physical deterioration is normative and takes place in an ordered fashion, however the timing of the process is dependent on many factors facing each elder. These factors include their physical condition, psychological functioning, social components, as well as economics, social status and supports, racial and cultural background, gender and sexual preference, level of education, and genetic strengths and vulnerabilities (Ashford & LeCroy, 2012).…

The audience of this summary is a worker for the federal government. The purpose is to give insight on the disability trends common in places such as Hale County, where school is minimal and so are the job prospects. The writing is more formal as this is an academic setting. The worker would most likely be reading this summary to find explanation in the rising trend in disability applicants. I am assuming that the worker would be knowledgeable on subjects such as the American’s with Disability Act and the process of applying for Disability.…
