Improved Essays
1a- 4 domains of psychology that I find the most interesting are personality, memory, animal behavior, and evolution.
Memory- I have been interested in this domain of psycholgy ever since I read an article about how the brain distorts memories each time they are recalled. This led to me questioning every memory I have and wondering how much my brain has changed them over the years. Having knowledge about how the brain stores memories would also hopefully give me ideas to improve my own.
Personality- I find this area of psychology to be interesting because I often wonder why people act the way that they do.
Animal behavior- This area of psychology is interesting to me because I often wonder if animals act out of instinct or their own free will. Studying the psychology of animal behaviour I would hopefully
Evolution- This area of psychology interests me because I went to a Catholic high school and was told that catholics don’t believe in evolution. Because of this belief, my classmates and I were never educated on the topic.

The dogs in group 1 were held in the harnesses for a certain amount of time and then let go without receiving shocks. The dogs in group 2 were paired up and leashed together but only one of them received an electrical shock that could be stopped by pressing a lever. The dogs in group 3 were also leashed together in pairs with one of them receiving shocks. What differentiated group 2 and 3 was that the shocks being administered to the dogs in group 3 could not be stopped. These shocks were random and seemed unavoidable, causing the dogs to believe that nothing could be done to stop them. After this experiment, the dogs in group 3 were placed in boxes individually and shocked. Although the boxes could be easily escaped by jumping, the dogs did not. Seligman concluded that the dogs had been conditioned to believe that they could not escape, thus learned helplessness was

The dogs in the escape group and the no-escape group were put into harnesses, similar to Pavlov, and administered a shock that could only be stopped (controlled) by the escape group by pressing a panel with their head. The no-escape group was paired with a dog from the escape group, but they had no control over the shocks and could not stop them by pressing the panel. The pairing of both groups insured that both dogs had the same intensity and duration of the shock, the only difference being that only the escape group had control over the shocks. The no-harness control group did not participate in this part of the…

In the 1900s, personality theorists–in particular, Freud, Jung, Adler, Erikson, Allport, Cattell & Eysenk, Skinner, Bandura and Mischel, Rogers and Maslow, and May–did research and experimentation to understand human personality and made some insightful discoveries that give different lenses, or perspectives, through which people can understand themselves and their behavior. This paper identifies a specific personal characteristic (i.e., a behavior or mental process) of mine that I believe sets me apart from the majority of other people and then, through the viewpoint of each theorist mentioned above, explains how I acquired or maintained it. The special behavior is my tendency to get restless (antsy, hyper) and unable to relax for very…

The behavioral aspect of phychology is very important to understanding how people act. “Ivan Pavlov was the Russian physiologist that was able to demonstrate that dogs could associate something as neutral such as the ring of a bell could trigger the salvation of a dog.” (Hockenbarry) This was a very immense contribution to phycology because it was able to show future psychologists that people are also able to connect a neutral object with an upcoming event. A person may associate the siren of a police car with something that has gone wrong.…

Psychology The medical field is intriguing because I enjoy helping others and helping them find solutions to their problems. Therefore, I’ll be researching the career of a psychologist. Psychology is fascinating, being able to understand and comprehend why people do what they do, how their experiences have affected them, and how it has shaped them into who they are today creates a completely different understanding and perspective towards others. In my opinion, a psychologist is someone to talk to when there’s no one else to turn to, or if one needs a neutral opinion to a critical situation.…

Wilhelm Wundt first began research for psychology psychologists have developed from around the world to bring us five main perspectives of psychology, known as, the five schools of thought. The five schools of thought help people to understand why people do certain motions, how people interact with each other, where we develop our mannerisms, and to have a deeper understanding of the human mind, through: biological, psychodynamic, behavioral, cognitive and humanistic perspectives. In modern societies, psychology is considered as the science of the mind or of the mental states and process. On the one hand, most psychologist agree with the fact that psychology is a real science and the research behind this discipline can be fully reliable using the appropriate scientific method. On the other hand, some people believe that psychology cannot be defined as a science because feelings, mental states and behaviours are not always defined with scientific evidences. It is my belief, that psychology can be explained trough scientific method and research because as the science of the brain it implicates a biological aspect that can be tested only by fair tests and experiments. First of all, psychology has always been in the centre of an argument over whether or not it is a real science.…

In Sigmund Freud’s Psychoanalytic theory, Psychic Determination is when we have no control over our actions because our unconscious mind chooses for us. Symbolic Meaning is when every single action we make has a meaning. Unconscious Motivation is when we rarely understand the reasons behind our behavior, and come up with reasons to explain our behavior.…
