Assignment 1.1- The Ecological Footprint

1. What is an Ecological Footprint?
An ecological footprint measures the impact an individual has on an environment. It takes into account all the items addressed in the online quiz such as our eating habits, energy consumption, transportation, housing, and carbon footprint to show a person’s impact on the earth and its resources.
2. What were the results of your test and what, if anything, did you find surprising or noteworthy?
My results were pretty surprising to me. I did not realize how much of an impact I had on the earth. My ecological footprint was 9 global hectares with 59% of that being my carbon emissions, which was a shocking 15.6 tonnes (approx.

I can start eating less meat products and try to eat more local, unpackaged, and unprocessed foods. I can also try to make my home more energy efficient: by using energy efficient lights, climate control, and having efficient appliances. Also generating less trash and recycling more will be beneficial. Finally, I need to work on lessening my carbon emissions from my transportation. I need to try to carpool more or use public transportation more. I also should look at getting a more fuel-efficient vehicle than a truck with low gas …show more content…
What changes would you suggest to others to reduce their Footprint?
I would suggest that others follow the same changes I need to make. If everyone ate less meat, bought local food, made their homes more energy efficient, and found a way to lessen their carbon emissions from transportation it would make a huge difference. Even if everyone just did one of these things to lessen their footprint it could make a positive change.
6. What is the relationship between changes in your consumption level and your Footprint? (What happens to your Footprint as your consumption level changes?) Why is this significant?
As I changed my consumption to reflect the changes I mentioned above (eating habits, efficiency at home, and lessen my carbon emissions from transportation) my Footprint went down. This is significant because some of these changes are not that hard to implement and if I could just integrate some of them into my life it could really help the Earth and if everyone just took small steps to change their Footprint it would make a real positive difference in the world.
7. What are the two most significant categories of your Ecological Footprint and

the author Robert Kate discusses how we as the people and the nation must go through seven transformations of energy reducers if we want to help reduce the levels of gas emission from greenhouse gases. By following those seven transformations of energy reducers then we are helping reduce the global warming levels. Robert also goes on to discuss that the people that want to help save and retain the Earth’s figure are also the people that are making it difficult to save the Earth because the environmentalist are suggesting ideas that are either out of hand for the community or is out of budget for the government even with the aid of a program to help us. The author is directing this article to environmentalist, activists, and other people who are seeking to be either involved or helping to save the Earth by accomplishing community projects to save or keep the environment clean and in tip top shape. Robert gives the audience a blunt and straightforward answer on how to help the environment without dealing with planting tons of windmills which would not help but would increase the levels of CO2 that is released into the air, that us as people do not want.…

The quiz was very interesting and I must say I enjoyed it. I never knew the smallest thing that we do on a regular can make an big impact on the environment such as taking a shower. My ecological footprint was very similar to yours. I believe a shower is very relaxing so I tend to take 10 minutes showers when it could be reduced to 7 minutes to save on gallons of water. I was mostly amazed by only eating meat only one night a week.…

My score was average and I believe this has a great deal to do with not knowing what other contributions I can make, furthermore, any other contributions I make will have a minuscule influence on the wider problem that is damaging the environment. These feelings relate to defence mechanisms which were originally introduced by Freud (e.g. Freud 1986 [1926] cited in Adams, 2015) in his progression of psychoanalysis. Psychoanalysis highlights the association between unconscious and conscious influences in determining what shapes human behaviour. Therefore, my way of coping with the detrimental impact on the environment is to unconsciously use defence mechanisms. In particular, displacement, taking simple actions, for example turning the water off when brushing my teeth.…

In the next stage of my project I wanted to see how much my household impacted the environment. As posted on my carbon footprint, the total results stated that in total my family emits 58.3 tons of carbon dioxide per year. My carbon footprint is based on the accumulation of what my family in the household uses, a household of four, on transportation, energy, food and other forms of shopping. The results states that my household holds a positive impact to our environment with a 25% better performance than the households in my area. I was expecting that the impact would be average…

But it is easier said than done since there are so many aspects to be considered. The best thing would be if we were able to replace all fossil fuels and replace them with equally efficient but renewable energy sources. That way, we would not have to end up in the seat we are at right now. We need more energy because we have become more people, the energy we get is adversely affecting the climate and keeps the energy sources from running out when we have consumed them. It is very difficult and time-consuming for an entire planet to make such rapid conversion as necessary to cut emissions.…

Our Personal Responsibility toward the Natural Environment Introduction Humans are part of the natural eco-system that makes up our planet. Without this eco-system and the ability of Earth to support life, humans might very well cease to exist. As residents of planet Earth, humans have a responsibility to take care of the natural environment. Part of taking care of the environment involves a certain degree of social responsibility when it comes to disposing of waste, using natural resources, and operating businesses. Some aspects of social responsibility are not within the direct control of all humans, but there is the possibility of indirect control.…
