Assignment 1: Personal Perspective On Aging

Assignment 1: Personal Perspective on Aging Throughout my life, I have been an individual who moderately dwells in the past, thinks in the now, and almost entirely, pushes away the future. I truthfully did not spend much time in contemplation on whether I should or should not take this course as my decision was solely on the basis of getting credits to fulfill my psychology degree requirements. After the thirty-first of May, the first day of class, I sparked an interest in the psychology of aging. The videos and discussion in class reminded me of my favorite person, one who is an older adult. For this reason, the aging process is already slightly more intriguing to me. In regards to the age I want to live to, I am entirely unsure. Surprisingly,

My Late Live Aging Describe the impact on you physically, emotionally, socially, and Financially (as much as you can imagine the impact). Living with a chronic condition such as arthritis in late life would feel as if I am held captive within the walls of a prison cell with no way out. My condition will be a constant reminder of not being able to physically experience life’s voyage because it is now a struggle to accomplish even the simplest task, such as tying my shoe lace or walk up a flight of stairs. If arthritis is my condition, I could only imagine the aches and pains invading my joints and body experiencing limitations making it hard to maintain normalcy and independence. Simply put, my level of activity will decrease, however,…

Learning about successful aging in this chapter gives me a reason to feel more optimistic about aging because, in the book, it states that “everyone wants to age “successful,” although we may differ in how we define successful aging. To some, this may mean maintaining good health and being free of diseases that might limit physical and mental skills and the ability to actively participate in desired daily activities (Rowe & Kahn,1998). As a person who believes in the saying of this quote. I never thought about successful aging to be more than just that. Until Kristen Lowry, her colleague, and David Snowdon talked about their ideas and research.…

Overall, I believe that as we age overtime, we can see a whole meaning of life through a different perspective. I also believe that if we do not take care of our bodies when we are younger than we suffer the consequences from health problems as we age overtime. In addition, I believe that as we age we take advantage of every moment or opportunity that we have in order to reflect on it as we age so that we can feel accomplished…

“Senioritis: An ebbing of motivation and effort by school seniors as evidenced by tardiness, absences, and lower grades” (Merriam-Webster Dictionary. "Senioritis"). All throughout America, thousands of seniors develop symptoms of this debilitating disease, especially during their second semesters. Is this epidemic a legitimate illness, or is senioritis just a rationalization made by lazy students? Although several seniors say otherwise, senioritis is a pseudo-scientific disease employed by students to slack on their studies and extracurricular activities. Despite senioritis being a fake illness, defense mechanisms, or “unconscious process[es] that protect individuals from painful ideas” are commonly used by seniors to make their impending futures seem less frightening ("Defense…

Describe Your Feelings and Beliefs on Aging in the United States Looking back from the time I started my nursing career to the present, I have seen how the image of the older adults has evolved from “the stereotypical views and images associated with ageing” (Grant, 2001, p. 777), to a more positive regard of the older population. In addition, Healthy People (HP) 2020’s focus on “maintaining the quality of life and wellness of older adults” (HP 2020, 2015) has set new targets for nursing education. Nursing faculty are urged to “integrate older adult content throughout nursing programmes to enhance nursing practice with an ageing population” (Baumbusch, Dahlke, & Phinney, 2012, p. 2550).…

Aging is a beautiful challenging unique process that we have the privilege of tackling in each of our lives. For some it may be an easy planned out progression without many bumps in the road, but for most it is an ever changing journey that makes us who we are today. Aging doesn’t always ask us what we want or what we planned on doing with our time, but instead gives us experiences, good and bad, that make up our lives. What better way to understand being an adult and the aging process than to ask people who are right in the middle of it! Because different people with different ages have different experiences, I interviewed a 20 year old, a 58 year old and a 67 year old and asked about their aging experiences.…

For this report I interviewed my great grandmother, Margaret Westphal, about the changes she is encountering within each domain throughout late adulthood. Last April she celebrated her 76th birthday and appears to be aging successfully according to John Rowe and Robert Kahn (Boyd & Bee, 2012, p. 462). Rowe and Kahn define successful aging as maintaining physical health, cognitive abilities, being involved in social and productive activities, and being satisfied with life. (Boyd & Bee, 2012, p. 462). When asked questions regarding the physical domain, several things my grandmother mentioned are common changes that occur in late adulthood.…

    Essay On Senescence

    • 969 Words
    • 4 Pages

Senescence is a robust tumor suppressive mechanism that inhibits the proliferation of damaged as well as initiated cells in response to a diverse range of stresses. The observations that human benign cancer precursor lesions are comprised of senescent cells further provide evidence that senescence is a physiological mechanism that prevents cancer progression in humans, possibly at an early stage. Senescence is clearly not fail-safe, since cells in pre-cursor lesions occasionally progress towards advance stages of cancer (Michaloglou et al., 2005). However, what remains unclear is if cells in these pre-cursor lesions escape senescence by acquiring changes that help them overcome the restrictive barriers of proliferation or if cancer progression…

When I first read this, I kept stopping after the first line thinking how we could consider the old dishonorable. They are weighted down with a life-long story, one that bears to be told no matter who they are or were. Seneca references how our age is all we have to show for our time here. I disagree, we leave behind the ability to share our stories, our battles and struggles or our loves of a life time. Our lives are a legacy to be told, the truth in this story is the sad events of those who’ve died anonymously.…
