1.1) According to Schrems (2014) vulnerability can mean many things, but one definition of vulnerability is when there is the potential for harm to occur without the ability to protect yourself. I would consider this family vulnerable, especially the new mother, Fatima. As she suffers from post traumatic stress disorder, and safety concerns both inside and outside the home. However, other characteristics or needs that would influence participation in the research study are cultural beliefs, such as a paternalistic household (Shami & Sheika, 2000), language barrier, no local family support, and Fatima’s distrust in medical professionals (Kaakinen, 2015).

1.3) Safeguards that can be used are making sure that there messaging system that is used has been secured, and that information that is sent through the system be encrypted (Stine & Scholl, 2010). Some other safeguards are making sure staff are properly trained and know the policies while using electronic communication. Policies can be implemented so there is certain confidential information can be send, and personal identifies are not used.

Using electronic messaging would provide the ability to send important information to the midwife as soon as possible. Although the research done by Lyngstad et al. (2010), found that communication was not done in a timely way, I feel that in the United States we are more technologically advanced and more inclined to use
