Assignment 1: Creating A Professional Learning Community

I enjoyed reading the scenario about "Creating a Professional Learning Community." I think I would have done the same steps the principal Williams did: create a leadership team, introduce the vision, let staff have an input on the vision, and create and maintaining a professional learning community. This is a great way of implanting the distributive leadership theory.
I have read about the importance of professional learning communities, and I can see the benefits for students and staff. I think that instead of looking at schools as a place where teaching happens, we should see them as a place where learning is happens. Students should not be the only one learning, but teachers should also be on going learners through discussions, meetings, and professional developments that will help them meet their student goals.
At our school we have PLCs, but they can be improved. For the most part, teachers only mention PLCs when they are required to do a data cycle and meet with their PLC team to talk about data and results. I think that PLCs should be more than just sharing data, but a place where teachers are comfortable with sharing their ideas and concerns on the topic or objective they are teaching.

Teachers should use the data from their PLC data cycle to identify the needs of the students and not as just see them as numbers or extra work. If the scores are low, then teachers should meet with other staff to get help or request trainings in the topic they are focusing on. Teachers should also be open to sharing their data with other staff. Most of the time we feel like our data needs to be better once we do the post test, but if our data shows that students did not master that objective or topic, teachers should ask themselves how to reteach it or ask others for help.
