Assignment 1: Clinical Analysis

Improved Essays
This was an excellent week. I learned how to do assessments based on the cardiac and respiratory systems. I was able to serve food, help assist with feeding, and observe the residents chart. In addition, I worked more independently with the residents at the nursing home. I was able to engage in conversation, assist with toileting, and attend a social activity with the residents. I also learned how to combine and practice my assessments that I learned up to week 8. I was able to hear crackling sounds in the lungs of a resident who has COPD.

Moreover, my biggest challenge this week was understanding everything that I should assess by observing the resident’s diagnoses. I knew some signs and symptoms of some diseases but I did not have access to a computer to look it up. I would ask some of the LPN’s, but they seemed a bit annoyed to answer some of my questions. The CNA who I was with for the day seemed as if she did not want to be bothered. Another challenge, was trying to assess my resident and not knowing their schedule for that day. For instance, I should have done my residents assessment before eating lunch, because after lunch he had a doctor appointment. I know we were only at the nursing come for 4 weeks, but this week I was starting to get comfortable and getting to know the routine of some of the residents.

Professor Burket, was really helpful with providing information about many of the diagnoses I observed. After I seen my first resident go to his doctor appointment, I asked the CNA about other residents, so I can manage my time appropriately. When my CNA seemed as if she did not want to be bothered, I would ask if there is something that I can do or would she recommend anything for me to do. She recommended that the dining hall always need help and that’s when I was able to help assist with feeding for the

Although I enjoyed working with all of the patients, there were a few of them that surely stood out. There was this lady who is diagnosed with ALS it is a nervous system disease that weakens your muscles and is not reversible. She had limited movement with her eyebrows and had none in her arms, legs and mouth. Another patient that I enjoyed helping was an older man who was traced. I've learned plenty throughout the past eight weeks. Looking back, the nursing process and cultural competence were the two concepts that I took the most away from. Learning the nursing process has taught me the importance of providing patient-centered care. Since then I have began to apply the steps of the nursing process while working as a nursing assistant and it has changed the quality of the care that I provide. I plan to bring what I've learned about the role and responsibilities of a nurse to my future clinical rotations.…

Clinical staging views the illness as a continuum from at risk to severe disorder, meaning it aims to guide treatment approaches at each stage (Scott et al., 2013). There are two assumptions crucial to the utility of this model. Firstly, patients who are less severe will respond better to treatment, and secondly, these treatments will be milder (McGorry, Hickie, Yung, Pantelis & Jackson, 2006). If this model can be applied to schizophrenia, it suggests we can increase the benefits of receiving a diagnosis will be significantly improved.…

I learned to pay attention to my participant’s non-verbal communication, their moods, their strengths, their weaknesses and I learned about teamwork. Every day I had to wash my hands and changed gloves after every resident. I also took necessary measures to ensure the safety of the residents while they were in the lifts or in the wheelchairs. Most importantly we always had to ensure the privacy of the residents while they were being changed. Personal care was hectic but I got to appreciate the code of conduct with respect to working with people with disabilities.…

Today at Simulation Lab I performed health history on a patient. Firstly, I commenced by preparing myself for the interview. Although I was nervous, as a nurse I had to be confident and prepare myself mentally and kept an open mind to meet the patient. In addition to preparing myself, I prepared the environment, making sure seating and arrangement was in place and the room was comfortable and private. Having done this, I utilized Florence Nightingale’s theory of environmental need.…

On a beautiful Wednesday afternoon after school, I was able to take a peek into my future. I have always been excited to become a nurse since I decided that this will be my major, and on that Wednesday I was able to experience this first hand. At my mother’s work, Behavioral Healthcare Partners, I was lucky enough to be sent to work in their medical office. Not only did I have an unbelieveable mixture of nerves and excitement during this experience, but I also learned a lot my first, second, and third day here working in the medical department. I felt my heart racing as I entered the medical building at Behavioral Healthcare Partners as I was about to see what the rest of my life may be centered around.…
