The reason is the fact that this age group requires play of all sorts. Children of this age group assume roles of power which allow them to say or do things they are not able to otherwise. This act was actually a part of Briana’s imagination, which means she was exploring ideas and being creative by creating a world and manipulating it according to her choices. “Edwards says for weeks she noticed her son would keep his elbows tucked close to his sides when at home.” That’s a discovery Colene Edwards, a mother from Brisdale Public School in Brampton, made during parent-teacher night. While the teacher did communicate with her concerning the large size of her son, the teacher never confessed to using a segregated tactic to teach her son, Anelka, about personal space. To distinguish him from the classroom, a pie-shape with masking tape separated his desk; and a box on the ground further divided him from his classmates. The teacher’s case was also questioned because Anelka was the only black student in the class and not allowed to freely explore the room.…

When raising a child, it is ultimately the responsibility of the parents to teach their children right from wrong. There are many different methods of disciplining a child. Some are viewed as more “acceptable” than others. Whether parents chose the more “acceptable” method, such as a time out, or the less “acceptable” method of spanking, both are trying to teach discipline. Webster’s dictionary defines spanking as “to strike on the buttocks with an open hand” (O’Callaghan 2).…

Did you know that parents are not the only people allowed to spank a child? Nineteen states, including North Carolina, still allow corporal punishment in schools (Strauss). In some states, parental consent isn’t even needed. What most parents don’t understand, however, is that letting your child be physically disciplined - by being spanked, caned, or rapped across the knuckles by a yardstick as punishment - doesn’t just make them obedient; it makes them fearful. While supporters of corporal punishment argue that spanking should be allowed in the classroom because it “reduces youth violence” and “teaches respect for authority,” (Farrell) it has been shown that children who have been spanked are more likely to engage in violent behaviors towards…

Whether it’s jotting down a DIY project, a recipe, or a piece of art work, making comments and acknowledging pertinent information to remember for later is a part of learning and building growth of mind. The anecdotal notes provided for analysis have many flaws in their collection of data. By utilizing anecdotal notes, teachers can provide a tangible vision of a child’s learning, through an objective, focused approach that may provide insight for future analysis and probable determination of delay and/or exponential development. The anecdotal record on ‘Tony’ gives us little insight into the goal of the notes and the child’s level of learning.…
