Experiential readiness is those factors that affect a person’s ability to learn or the way they learn. This could be their present and past experiences, cultural background, learning style, and etc. Emotional readiness is driven by one’s motivation. Motivation is greater when one perceives that the health information is of benefit to their lives. Also a person’s psychosocial adaptation to their health condition influences their emotional readiness to learn. If they are experiencing high anxiety or stress levels, or if they are in denial, they are often not ready to learn. Eating healthy, regular exercise, medication administration, and checking the blood glucose levels daily are important components that I will teach my client about. Eating healthy is most associated with the client’s experiential readiness to learn. The client’s cultural background is very significant in the types of foods consumed by the client. Also, the client may have had present or past experiences with eating disorders. When beginning to teach about the importance of exercise, I would assess the client’s experiential and emotional readiness to learn. If there is high anxiety and stress in the client, learning will not be achieved.
