I would argue that this comparison is only valid to some extent. It is only valid if you take into consideration the people who are extremists. When people are so addicted to drugs that it modifies their behaviour and makes them do things that normally wouldn’t do, I believe that it is the same thing than when someone is a religious extremist and that because of an irrational belief in a higher power or in an ideology, one does irrational things. We can find this type of behaviour in every religion. In addition, this comparison between extremists is valid at both end of the spectrum. Sometimes people are so anti-religion or anti-drugs that they can become violent or offensive towards someone who is religious or who does drugs.
