Assess The Difference Between Global Mindset And Cosmopolitanism

When we speak of a cosmopolitan mindset, it is necessary to make the differentiation between a global mindset and a cosmopolitan one. For the purposes of management sciences, the two are substitutable to a certain degree. Notable scholars of international management sciences such as (Gupta & Govindarajan, 2003) , (Ghemawat, 2011) and (Levy, Beechler, Taylor, & Boyacigiller, 2007) often use the two terms alternatively. A global mindset as defined by Gupta and Govindarajan is “one that combines an openness to and awareness of diversity across cultures and markets with a propensity and ability to synthesize across this diversity.” (2003, p. 117), or in more simpler terms “the ability to develop and interpret criteria for personal and business …show more content…

However, the difference from previous works was that now a local orientation or a loyalty to grassroots was not regarded as inferior as was the case with Kanter (1996). Managers needed to become more ‘hybrid’ as compared to flexible (Hallsal, 2009). Levy, Beechler, Taylor, & Boyacigiller in one of the most prominent papers on this topic, define cosmopolitanism as the balancing of global with the local and deriving value from local contexts and experiences to enhance global understandings. According to Levy et al, a cosmopolitan manager is pro actively seeking experiences to learn from people other than himself and integrate that knowledge with grassroots
