Conflict theorists have been critical of religion, seeing as it can be used to promote social quo and maintain social inequalities. Most religions teach that the social hierarchy is what God desires for His people. In a large society, this creates a lack of social mobility inhibiting a lack of balance between groups. This has been viewed in many societies of the past. For example, in the Middle Ages, Christians believed in the “divine right of kings,” stating that kings were chosen by God. Disobeying the king in these societies was equal to disobeying God. Hinduism states that the caste system is God’s way of determining social order.
