Last year, upon enrollment (J.C.’s) mother shared information about her concerns regarding her child on the Ages & Stages Questionnaires: Social Emotional (ASQ-SE). The ASQ- SE is a “first level screening tool that is designed to identify children who may be at risk for social or emotional difficulties” (ASQO, 2009). The answers provided by the parent are scored and help to determine whether the child's development appears to be “progressing as expected or whether the child should be referred for a professional evaluation” (ASQO, 2009). Just to give you a little information about J.C. he is four years old he is a single child. J.C lives with both parents and his grandmother.
After reviewing (J.C.’s) ASQ-SE and observing the child for a couple of week the lead teacher observed the behaviors that the parent had identified by the parent. For example, he had a short attention span, language delay, difficulty taking turns and playing with his peers. Also, he tried to harm himself as well as his peers. The lead teacher set up a meeting with both parents to discuss her observation and set a plan in place to help (J.C.). We invited her to have dad come and observe him. She stated that she didn’t have the same view as him, but he was in denial. During the meeting the lead teacher informed (J.C.’s) mother about the programs referral process and provided her the forms. The mother stated she would talk to her husband and inform us about her decision whether to refer him. After, a couple of days of waiting the lead teacher spoke with the child’s mother and asked if she had decided to proceed with the referral process.
