One in three women worldwide have experienced either physical or sexual violence in their lifetime (Statistics). The impact it has on women ranges from physical, sexual, and mental consequences that can sometimes even lead to death. Violence against women is something that affects women of every social and economic class, every religion, race and ethnicity. Many of the women’s movements have helped decrease the amount of incidences that occur but still there is not enough being done to prevent the violence that is still occurring. While sometimes women are attacked by strangers, the majority of these incidences are typically from a person close to the victim. Every nine seconds in the US, a woman is assaulted or beaten (Statistics). Violence is something that can be prevented and with all of the laws that have been put in place should not be occurring as often as it does. There are so many victims that have suffered or will suffer from physical abuse at some point in their lives. Violence against women is a tragic cycle that starts with younger boys who are either victims as well or have viewed the violence happening to a mother, sister or even a friend. I think that starting with these young boys will make a big difference by making them more aware of the problem and how to stop the cycle. Men need to stand up for women and these behaviors need to be looked at as unacceptable. People need to stop looking the other way when it comes to violence against women. Like Katz says, we need to break the silence that revolves around gender violence (Katz). While men are the root of this problem we also need to
