There are two punishment goals I decided to write about after learning about them in week three’s reading materials, one of those being Incapacitation and the other being Deterrence. The first one I would like to discuss is Incapacitation. Incapacitate means you are not capable of doing the things you would normally do or choose to do. Incapacitation is one out of several forms of punishment that can be handed down from the court system. The punishment goal Incapacitation means to be imprisoned, to remove the criminal offender from society as he/or she could potentially be a risk based on the crimes they have committed and to send them into the correctional system in hopes of keeping the public …show more content…
This, punishment can be effective and reformative to the right offender normally someone who does not have a criminal past and or is able to follow the rules set out by the court and complete the necessary steps to finish their probation or parole sentence. It also can help an offender get back on track and become a productive citizen by requiring them to have a job, a stable residence and also test clean from any drug or substances that are prohibited. However, there are more serious stipulations that come with being placed on probation or parole such as being given a curfew or as serious as being sentenced to jail or prison for violating the rules and not completing the probation or parole …show more content…
It's another form of punishment that is handed down from the court system. The idea of deterrence is to use the example or threat of punishment to convince other individuals that criminal activity is not worthwhile. For example, one punishment that can be given to scare other individuals to not commit the same or similar crime is incarceration, or the death penalty depending on the charges and nature of the crime. I believe in theory the punishment goal deterrence would be effective. Unfortunately, I believe it isn't if it was very effective there wouldn't be such high crime rate number or thousands of new crimes being committed every day across the United States. When using the punishment goal deterrence, there are certain situations and punishments I do not exactly agree with. For example, sentencing someone a longer prison sentence does nothing but put the offender in a cell. Yes, It takes them away from society for a while if not sentenced to life or the death penalty but sitting there does nothing productive for that individual but gives them the opportunity to learn from other fellow prisoners, therefore, creating a more proficient criminal so in the end, it affects us all as a
