In this section, I will examine the history of how courtship was not relevant in America and marriage was a means of survival. Even though the romance was not present and seemed unfair to the women as Crapo states that Cultural relativism is "the idea that the significance of an act is best understood by the standards of the actor 's own cultural milieu" (Crapo, 2013, p. 47). In other words a person that may not see this as sane if he were in the same conditions he most likely will do the same thing. So this allowed for many different trends regarding marriage and courtship to take on many changes as this dynamic history shows us. Now in today’s time there are many different customs concerning courtship and marriage in America but there is one custom that is dominant over the rest. This involves the couple dating for a while or for a short time it can be soon as the same day one of them will propose to the other to ask for their hand in marriage and they would exchange engagement rings this would be known as the engagement period. The couple would set a date for marriage than invite all their friends and family and exchange vows. Once the vows were exchanged the couple would exchange another set of rings called the wedding rings. The ring was to symbolize that the individual was no longer single and the ring was placed on the left hand on the finger next to the pinky known as your ring finger. After they were pronounced man and wife a famous saying follows with the words you may kiss the bride. Nearly all culture has different customs to indicate a transformation in an individual’s life. Matrimony is one of the greatest Western cultural simple life modifications to all people of all cultures. So it should be no surprise to find many traditions in courting and marriage in the ever evolving United States of America. America allows each individual to uniquely make their own tradition as they get married or it allows them to use the traditional ways of courtship to begin a marriage.
