Collaboration and mutuality grew out of dissatisfaction with the medical community and has since spread to many professional arenas that are involved with helping improve human life through active medical, mental health and physical recovery and resiliency programs. Alan Bleakly (2014) posits that collaboration and mutuality are absolutely fundamental to patient-centered medical practice and care. In his book titled Patient-Centered Medicine in Transition: the heart of the matter (2014), Bleakly proffers basic building blocks (p. 81) for this transition: o Patients are the catalyst or activator of change, essentially they drive the healing process o That the foremost aspect is a sense of attachment or relationship between healer and healed o That therapeutic alliance is essential o Treatments/interventions must be locally focused fitting into the life and system of the patient o That the Healers role is one of building and encouraging capacity and competence in the patient o The Healer is the advocate when advocacy is needed, that the focus is on the good of the patient rather than systemic demands

The sanative paraprofessionals search to gain specific information about the unique nature of each person they work with and build trust with those seeking to heal from wounds of trauma. It is unfortunate that many caring and heart-led people reach out to the hurt and wounded to bring relief, but are doing so from a culturally egocentric prospective, which can lead them to under-utilize those things that could most be helpful and to over-utilize behaviors, thoughts or approaches that actually hinder the healing
