To the ASME, improving the general welfare of society through the utilization of the specialized skills of engineers is highly stressed. One must consider the possible consequences of actions and decide the best course of action to benefit the safety and health of the public. The ASME requires engineers to take responsibility for one’s actions. Falsification of facts, omission of information, and deceitful actions to any employer, coworker, or member of the public is forbidden. The welfare of the public takes precedence over personal opinions, issue, and beliefs. Development of the engineering profession’s prestige is also an objective, but that is not as important as honesty, integrity, and dignity. Great emphasis is placed on these characteristics. Almost every engineering society agrees on that. In fact, there seems to be little variation among the core of engineering codes of ethics. Never is one to disregard the trust place upon one by an employer, purposely give flawed advice or divulge private information given to one in confidence. Also, an engineer must only participate in projects within their areas of capability. It is a professional obligation to act in a manner benefitting the prestige of the engineering profession. For the most part, these simple principles are the basics for any situation and can apply to anyone. Everyone should behave honestly. Everyone should consider the public well-being to be of great importance. Trust given by anyone, whether friend or stranger, should never be betrayed; purposely sabotaging a person is deceitful.
