Asleep Brian Doyle Analysis

Brian Doyle allows us to see beauty on a day of unimaginable horror. Red flames and black smoke twisting and escaping toward the clear beautiful blue sky. Burning paperwork, shattered glass, and mangled metal debris rain down on the shocked pedestrians below. The victims hold on to one another in comfort from the blast. Praying and calling loved ones. The Smoke, flames, and heat become too much and they clamber toward the closest window to try and relieve their lungs. Their eyes water and the pain becomes unbearable. They stack themselves into any open section of the windows so they can to gulp in the precious life giving gas. Who knew they would ever be in this much desperate need for one swig of clean oxygen. The window ledge on the 108th floor is so inviting compared to the intolerable heat of their office space. People holding tight to the concrete between the windows, hoping for help. Disoriented from the impact and suffocating smoke they hear the sounds of coworkers screaming in pain and dying on the floor. Wreckage and debris haphazardly fallen all over with a layer of dust and ash covering everything. The couple decides they can no longer bear it and there is no hope so they jump with the desire for a quick death instead of the intense pain of burning alive. Deep down we all want to be loved and share our experiences with another person. Good experiences and especially scary ones. Human beings need companionship, understanding, and comfort from another human being, this is why we hug. We need someone to tell us it is okay even when it isn’t. We need someone to hug us tight when we are sad. We need someone to hold our hand when we are going through pain. Carry around the knowledge that we are not alone is
