I am looking forward to having an opportunity to gain practical and interactive experience with ASL, Deaf Culture, and being able to implement what I have learned in class. I want to take advantage of instances where I can strengthen my ASL skills, increase my overall confidence, and take advantage of feedback from individuals outside our regular classroom setting. I feel this placement will also help me become more aware of areas where I need to improve in regards to my ASL, and interactions with individuals in the community.
Also, I am excited to be in an environment where I can actively measure my personal development with the assistance of staff who are experienced in Deaf Culture, bicultural interaction, and ASL. I also want to build

The leadership role in which I have had the greatest positive influence in has been as the Fine Arts Commissioner in ASB. As the Fine Arts Commissioner, it is my responsibility to showcase the performing arts in any way I possibly can, and while I have successfully done that, I’ve also successfully created a new rally that now occurs every year. Even though last year was my first year on ASB, I still made an impact on my school by taking charge of said new rally. My ASB director wanted to try having an on-campus winter dance before winter break and we figured the best way to promote the new dance would be through a rally. In addition, my ASB director didn’t want to have cheer and dance perform in this rally, for they perform in every other…

As we discuss communication disorders, it is important to discuss hearing disorders as well; it is essential to include hearing loss and deafness in the conversation in this course, seeing as these two things influence the ability to speak and communicate orally, seeing that hearing helps with acquiring and producing speech and language. A deaf person is a minority in the hearing world and often struggles to exchange information, ideas, feelings with those who are hearing. Thus, it is important to be informed about auditory issues and deaf culture. And the book is another resource to assist in gathering the knowledge on these issues and on the community to best serve individuals who are deaf, to remain cognizant of culturally diverse children and adults and to remain culturally competent. Train Go Sorry is also a reminder that deaf people are people first, just an everyone else who do not fit within the norm.…

The book i choose to share with students was “The Most Magnificent Thing,” by Ashley Spires. The main objective for this lesson was; that students will be able to actively listen to a story as the teacher reads aloud. Students will be asked to make predictions throughout the story. I encouraged students to consider the pictures and other clues within the context when creating predictions. The Read Aloud connected to a variety of course content and allowed me to encourage students to connect with the story by bringing the story into their own lives.…

When I first came to college, I was scared to take a college level English class. In high school, I slacked off all of my English classes due to the fact that all teachers taught pointless lessons. In addition, students would get A’s or B’s for the words that are on paper rather than the critical analyzes. Lang 120 is the first English class to step away from my passive writing and challenge myself more on critical analyzes and the stages of writing. In my Lang 120 class with Professor Pisano, I learned how to connect information together, how to actively gather sources, and effectively communicate with an audience.…

As a Site Coordinator at an after school program, it is easy for me to share my first hand observations with a vast majority of students. To begin, the layout of the site is not ideal seeing as the program is held in an Elementary school cafeteria. With 30 students enrolled in the program, it is easy for one to believe that chaos is easily accessible. Within the 30 students, ages range from 5 to 12. To avoid the said chaos, there is a lot of structure and a routine that is implemented.…

This past week on September 29th, I sat down in person to interview my host teacher; Mrs. B. Mrs. B is a special education teacher at New Haven Elementary School of Columbia Public Schools, and she has been teaching students with disabilities for 15 years. Throughout all 15 years of teaching, she has always been in a self-contained classroom, but as the years have gone on she has experienced students of all different functioning levels. Her first year of teaching was in Moberly, due to the fact that she was hired on as a basketball coach. After her first year there, she realized that the school was too small, so the rest of her fourteen years have been at the elementary school, New Haven. I am a freshmen student in college and I am also living with my parents so I do not have to pay for room and board at a college, this allows me less college expenses. When I was younger, my mother worked as an ASL interpreter (Her teachers were Sharon Wade and Kathy Jones at TJC) and she taught me a few signs. I have kept ASL up over the years so I would not loos the knowledge that she gave me.…

This class has provided me with a very valuable learning experience. As a psychology major I don’t have the opportunity to take classes in the ALS department very often. At the start of the semester when we discussed what SWAPA was I didn 't think much of it, especially because it involved performing my piece in front of the class which made me nervous. However, listening to my classmates perform their pieces each week was one of my favorite parts about the course. It was great to hear people taking the texts that we were reading and engage with them by relating them to personal things and experiences.…
