Some straightforward tips that could be applied to all new staff trainings and business practices to reduce waste and help save on purchasing costs for vendors are: Ask if your costumers need a receipt, if not do not print one! Encouraging patrons to bring their own mugs will decrease plastic and Styrofoam waste/use and can cut down on your supply prices. Certain coffee shops have recognized these savings and have included small discounts to consumers who bring their own mugs or bring in mugs purchased at their stores. 5.Expand front of house composting in Student Center East- Long Term Goal
Responsible Parties-
Director of Campus Auxiliary Services- help prepare new composting bins
Office of Sustainability- Help organizes the event and recruit volunteers. May help with compost signage
Director of Facilities Management- Develop adequate procedures for handling influx of compost streams
The Delta Institute – The Field Museum recruited intern/volunteers/workers from the Delta Institute to help conduct a similar waste study.
UIC Chancellor- Crucial to establish support for this policy and can direct to appropriate parties
Funding/Resources-
This could be a proposed UIC student green fee, every semester a portion of student tuition goes towards a sustainably fee which is used to fund student led projects The OFS could provide support through interns and well as the Delta Institute
The Illinois Food Scrap Collation provides a wealth of resources for those moving to front of house
