Early morning yesterday, April 6, 1862, nearly 44,000 Confederate soldiers lead by Gen. Albert Sidney Johnston attacked unsuspecting Union soldiers at ground near the log church Shiloh Meeting House at Pittsburg Landing on the Tennessee River under cover of surrounding forest. The Confederate offensive drove surprised Federal forces from their camps, nearly triumphing over Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant’s command of 40,000. Federals refused to surrender and Rebels soon became disorganized; by afternoon, Union soldiers had definitively and heroically established a battle line at the sunken road, known as the “Hornet’s Nest.” Rebel attacks were unsuccessful until massed artillery helped Confederates gain the upper hand as they surrounded Union…

I chose to investigate the environmental impact of gypsy moths because I have personally had experience cleaning up after these pests in northern Ohio and I know that they are becoming an issue in other parts of Ohio as well. I was able to witness some of the damage they have done while removing defoliated trees in Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Gypsy moths are a non-native, invasive species that, over the past decade, have been coming into the state from Pennsylvania and Michigan. The moth undergoes a complete metamorphosis and while a caterpillar it has the ability to feed on over three hundred species of trees and shrubs and cause serious damage and defoliation. The moth’s preference for oak, make the oak tree particularly at risk because the caterpillars favor it and a tree can typically only withstand two years of defoliation before the damage is permanent or results in the death of the tree.…

Monarch Butterfly and Habitat Loss Monarchs might as well be the most advantageous species on the planet considering they help with pollinating plants which produce our crops and provides a food source for birds and small reptiles. However, the number of monarchs is decreasing from habitat loss, climate change, chemical pollutants, poaching/farming, and public awareness. Herbicide is their biggest threat because it kills their main dish, which is milkweed. Remarkably, people from Science Daily have thought of asking state and local representatives to scale down of unnecessary mowing and herbicide application, promoting agricultural methods that doesn’t kill milkweeds and other plants that pollinators need, and plant milkweeds in areas that aren’t available. Monarchs do their job and now we should do ours.…
