Summary Of Khaled Hosseini's The Kite Runner

The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini is a novel about two boys who grew up in Kabul, Afghanistan. Both boys grew up living with their fathers and no mother in the picture; Amir’s mother died during childbirth and he now lives with his father Baba, Hassan’s mother ran away soon after she gave birth to him and he now lives with his father Ali where they work as Baba and Amir’s servants. The boys only one year apart grow up best friends but one day everything will change.
In the beginning of the novel it is December of 2001 when Amir gets a phone call from an old friend, Rahim Khan, in Pakistan saying that he must come home. School is closed for the season, and boys spend most of their time flying kites. One day Amir’s father takes Amir and Hassan to buy a new kite from an old blind man who makes the best in the city. However, the highlight of their winter is the annual kite-fighting tournament,. When a string is cut, the losing kite slowly falls to the ground, and a boy called a kite runner chase the kite across the city until it hits the ground. The last fallen kite of the tournament is a trophy of honor for the boys with the last kite in the air. Hassan is the best kite runner in Kabul, because he always seems to know exactly where a kite will land before it comes down. This year Amir and Hassan won the tournament and when Hassan went to find the kite he was pinned in an alleyway where three older boys named Assef, Kamal and Wali pin Hassan down on his stomach as Assef beats and rapes Hassan.
