Asian Carp

The prevention of the Asian Carp in the United States has been long standing battle. While first introduced as a food-fish and now for sport, Asian Carp is now viewed as an invasive species. In the summer of 2007 the U.S. Department of the Interior invoked the Lacey Act. In 2012, Congress implemented the “Stop Invasive Species Act”. This act charges the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers to increase the speed of their strategies of controlling the invasion. Urgency is required due to the fact that the invasion is moving faster than the prevention of it. By the time barriers are put up, Asian Carp have passed them. Today there are a few viable options that go beyond building dams or cutting off bodies of water completely. Sometimes, especially

This species was introduced into the UK in the 1970s as food source. It spread quickly up and downstream and human introduction, although illegal, is still continuing. It may travel over land to colonise near freshwater. Its negative impact is mainly due to the loss of the native crayfish species, the white-clawed crayfish (Austropotamobius pallipes) through spread of disease and direct competition. Furthermore, the Signal crayfish is also impacting the river banks as it uses to burrow into them, creating instability of the vegetation and the ground.…

Silent but deadly. It might be too late to save the aquatic animals in the Great Lakes from migrant species that have come to take over, and make a new home. Shipping vessels coming from other waters carry many unwanted guests, known as invasive species, to make home in our waters in the United States. Invasive species hiding in the ballast of ships entering the Great Lakes damage the Great Lakes’ ecosystem.…

Congress should reject bills that don’t focus on ongoing efforts to end and prevent overfishing through the use of science-based annual catch limits. Instead, they say, Congress should support and help support the conservation requirements of MSA that will supply enduring economic benefits to fishermen. They’re not the only ones who know the cost of this. “Old salt’s in England’s commercial cod fishery also know the cost of…

If Phragmites find their way into an agricultural crop, it will cause economic loss (Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, 2011). Property values will drop in areas where monocultures are found (Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, 2011). Phragmites have already impacted the recreational value of the beaches in the Georgian Bay area (Crowe et al., 2011). Charismatic native species, such as the 6 freshwater turtle species in Long Point, will see drastic population declines which impacts the communities surrounding Long Point personally (Bolton & Brooks, 2010). This is why the Invasive Alien Species Strategy for Canada was approved and why Acts, such as the Plant Protection Act, prevent movement of invasive pests between provinces (Government of Canada, 1990).…

Boating down the Wabash River near Lafayette on July 16, I witnessed firsthand the broad, winding river’s scenic beauty, but also got a lesson in the environmental challenges the river faces when two Asian carp hurled themselves out of the water and landed in our boat. The Wabash is Indiana’s iconic river and inspiration for our state song, yet in recent years two species of invasive Asian carp have infested portions of it. These voracious non-native fish consume nutrients in the water, disrupting the food chain and threatening the native fish enjoyed by Hoosier anglers and sportsmen. At the sound of outboard motors, groups of Asian carp will jump out of the water and can injure boaters.…

Introduced and native species can develop positive relationships with each other. Kornis et al. (2013) claimed that when the invasive round goby was introduced into the Great Lakes, the sites the round goby invaded had both a “significantly greater Shannon diversity and species richness compared to non-invaded sites” (p 189). Another example of these positive relationships is the Asian copepod that invaded the Columbia and Snake Rivers, and in all the sites in which it was present, there was a burst of different zooplankton in different seasons; however, in the site that the copepod did not invade, there was no bloom of any zooplankton (Emerson et al., 2015, p 37). Both examples suggest cases where the invasive species improved the abundance and biodiversity of the native…

Identifying context Research question How has the introduction of Nile perch affected the native species in Lake Victoria, Kenya? Environmental Issue Alien species are species that are introduced to a new environment and the introduction is mainly with the aim of increasing biodiversity in that specific environment although it sometimes can be for decorative purposes, pest control among others (Society, 2017). Some are intentionally introduced while other come into the new environment by mistake such as Bighead and Silver Carp fish that escaped from firms into Missouri river in North America (Society, 2017).They can have both negative and positive impacts in the new environment. Were all destined to fulfill a purpose in life in which we want a path that guides us without being so laborious. It's like a seed sprouting in the spring, the seed grows and flourishes into a beautiful flower all through summer to only wither and die in the cold winter, but it must all take place in order to regenerate. As humans were lit up with the seed of aspirations to then face yourself with obstacles that you never expected. We all want to get to those aspirations or the blooming stage, but it is equally essential to pass by the bloom and face the unawareness of life's reality before the new seed can be born. Death being so catastrophic portrays people being forlorn, but in a religious aspect we can see it as a beatific moment for one's…

What is an invasive species? According to the National Invasive Species Management Plan, an invasive species is defined as “a species that is non-native to the ecosystem under consideration and whose introduction causes or is likely to cause economic or environmental harm or harm to human health”. Invasive species will look like they belong in the environment they are taking over, however, more than likely they are over-powering a native species in their own habitat. Would you be able to identify one of the species I’m about to discuss? North America has more than twenty-nine hundred invasive species in our environment today.…
