Research has found that parental involvement, self esteem, and test scores all correlate and impact one another (Soojinda 2013). However not all parents have the option of being involved in their children’s education. Unfortunately that is the case for many Hmong American students. There are several obstacles impeding involvement for Hmong parents, most of them are not fluent in English, also they may lack the academic background if they did not receive an education, to provide academic support for their children at home (Vang 2005) . Most Hmong parents are concerned about their child’s education, however some parents still hold an old belief that the school’s staff have full authority over their child’s education (Vang 2005). When they do not receive any help or support from their teachers, they most likely will not ask for it. Many times the students chose not to ask for help because they are aware of the expectations teachers have of them, and being Asian American they feel the pressure of having to fit the model minority stereotype, therefore if they were to ask for help, the teacher might think less of them, which could be humiliating to the student. Unfortunately this will continue to happen, causing the student to only fall even more behind, creating a weight that the students will have to carry with throughout their
