As the daughter of an Asian immigrant, I’ve dealt with stereotypes my whole life. It’s true that my family can be considered “typically” Chinese; my mom urges me to study hard and I want to follow her footsteps in medicine. But my drive doesn’t come from a strict household like most people assume. At 35, my mom, with 2 year old me, my dad, and my grandparents, came to America. Divorced a year later, she single handedly took care of our family for over 14 years.…

Race relations between Asian Americans and Black Americans have always been rocky. In order to understand the historical relationship between Asian and Black Americans, it is important to understand the intersectionality of hip hop and how it’s shifted through history. There is so much racial tension between Asian and Black people and hip hop was used both to widen and close the gap between the two groups. Hip-hop for both Asian and Black people has been used as an act of rebellion, but despite this shared interest, tension between the groups still prevails. To move past these differences, we would have to first understand them: Asian hip-hop is different than Black hip-hop, hip-hop brings to light different types of stereotypes for Asian and…

This is not a zine for our racist Asian parents. We didn’t design Cocoon with the intent of converting internet neo-nazis into socially conscious feminists, nor for the purpose of turning people who unironically call people “sjw’s” into the people they used to call “sjw’s.” This is no feminist evangelism; we’re not attempting to call sinners to repent of their casual racism at the altar of anti-oppression. Ultimately, this zine is not for them — this zine is for us.…

Today’s society has placed plenty of stereotypes upon Asian Americans. Labeling them as the model minority, assuming that all Asian Americans are intelligent by nature, seems to be the most common (Szu 2003). These stereotypes have been negatively affecting the growing population of Asian Americans in the school systems, as they are leading to teacher bias. Bias in the classroom can cause teachers to view all their Asian American students as intelligent and assume they are receiving academic support at home although most are not, this is highly affecting those who struggle academically. As a result, many Asian Americans, such as Hmong students are not reaching their full potential in the classroom nor are they given an equal opportunity (Doan…
