My first job was when my former high school hired me to become an AVID tutor. It was my favorite job I’ve ever had because I got to work with kids in groups and befriend co-tutors. I never knew how hard math can people for students until I worked there. Usually about half the class needed help in math, and I remember I was the only tutor that was good at math. Being a tutor felt like I was actually doing something meaningful; I felt like I was helping students that were struggling in their classes and being a role-model to them. After AVID, it gave me the confidence to become a private tutor. Working as one was great because I could make my own schedule and be my own boss. Not only did I become their math coach, I also became their peer, someone that my students can look up to, and believe in them when they couldn’t themselves. To me, half of tutoring is teaching, the other half is being their motivator and supporter. I know some tutors don’t have the patience, and that’s the one thing you need because students hate math and it’s a gradual process. Not only do I have the patience, but I like math and I like to make it fun which I feel makes my students learn at their max capability. I’ve graduated with an associate 's of science degree emphasizing in math and science. My major at SFSU is political science. I’m not sure where I’ll be going with that, but I do like the subject. If I could, private tutoring is enjoyable …show more content…
If I am stuck, then I’ll need to know how to do it. After that, I’ll need to be given a similar problem and try to solve that. All of my students have different learning styles, but that’s the main method I use to tutor. Other tutors sometimes try to explain math verbally, but I think that may just confuse them even more. In my opinion, I think it’s best to just give them math problems, and work with them to try and solve it. A good tutor is being able to adjust to the student’s learning style. Whenever a student can’t learn a certain way, the tutor should have the student try from a different perspective and see if that helps better. The great thing about math is that there’s an infinite way to get to the answer so there are always better ways to learn. Other than tutoring, my passion is making videos and playing hacky sack. In high school, I used to be president of the hacky sack club, and hopefully, I’ll get to find people to play with me here at SFSU. I love the outdoors, camping, exploring, traveling, adventure; I’m not much for excesses and city life (ironic I know). If I could, I would live in the wild. Lastly, I enjoy peace and mental peace, and want to help people and society achieve that
