Ashley Pfeffer's Short Story 'Ashes'

Imagine being pressured into stealing money from your own parents. Ashleys is an average teenage girl, until her parents got divorced, she knew that it was never good in the beginning. Her dad is the fun, crazy, and the child of the relationship. On the other hand her mom was the educated, smart, and the realist of the two. Mom and dad were the complete polar opposites. Ashley did not steal the money because her mom was a good role model, Dad was selfish, and her dad put her in a bad spot.
Ashley did not take the money because her mom is a good role model for her. In the short story “Ashes” the author wrote, “Mom was still working on completing her degree, took Tuesday and Thursday evening classes…”(Pfeffer,1). Mom shows ashley that education is important to life. She goes back to college to get a better education, for a better job which brings more money to meet the needs for a quality life. Another reason why mom is a good role model is because in the text it says,”And mom was always prepared…”(Pfeffer,2). The first evidence from the text is,”You go up to the apartment,” he said “take the money, and come right down.”(Pfeffer,4). Is Ashley that delerious of what is going on? Dad is ordering her around like commanding her to do things. Also the author wrote,”What should I do? I looked out the window and saw only ash-grey sky.”(Pfeffer,4). Ashley is unsure what side to take and she questions herself on decisions she has to make. Her dad is making her make a choice. Lastly the author writes,”But it’ll be the start of something really, big, Ashes.”(Peffer,3). Dad wants Ashes to give into him and wants her to feel bad if she doesn’t get the money for him. Parents should never put their children in a bad spot because it is pressure and un-needed
