Ashes Common Assessment
According to Pfeffer divorce is hard and “whatever [Ashleigh’s parents problem] was [their marriage was] dying by the time [she] was born and dead before [she] was six” (Pfeffer 2). Ashleigh’s parents were going through rough times already when she was born and by the time she was six they were divorced. Her mom and dad were very different, with her dad being a “dreamer” and her mom being very practical. They got into a lot of arguments, one of them being mom didn’t like the fact dad called her Ashes for a nickname, when he was the one that wanted to name her Ashleigh in the first place. After the divorce Ashleigh’s dad got into some financial problems and asked Ashes to go “borrow” some money out of her mom's teapot

He was making her feel special and important to him. In the story Ashes he says “You’re the special one, Ashes. You’re the one-in-a-million girl” (Pfeffer 2). Does he really mean that? He’s just saying that to make her feel good so it will be easier to draw her into doing what he wants. Think about it? Would he have said that if he didn’t want her to do something for him? Also he is asking for two hundred dollars to pay off a deal and he’s going around buying Ashleigh lunch as quoted in the story, “...“Can you afford it?” I asked. “For a special date with my daughter?” he replied. “Of course I can afford it.”...”(Pfeffer 2) This quote proves that even before he asked for money, Ashleigh knows he doesn’t have much and wanted to make sure he had the money before taking her out to lunch. Later when they get to the apartment, Ashleigh’s dad explains how she has to go in and get the money for him. He then realizes he is kind of making her nervous and unsure so he repeats “You’re one-in-a-million” to make her feel okay and it worked because she got up there thinking how much he loves her and she loves him and took the money for …show more content…
“...“You all through?” he asked. I nodded”(Pfeffer 4). Dad went over his whole plan to get the money seeming sure it would all work without mom noticing and when he asked if Ashleigh was in or not she gave an unsure nod. Also she was up in the apartment with not much time to decide whether to do it or not. She knew her mom would be home soon and her mom could not know about her dad's plan. “...”Mom’ll be home soon,”...”What do I do if mom’s already in there?”...”(Pfeffer 4). Her instinct with no time was to just do what she was told. Ashleigh felt pressured by her father. She was frantic trying to make her choice and her dad put lots of weight on her shoulders with this mission. He told her if she wasn’t back in 10 minutes he’ll go home. This made Ashes nervous so she remembered her dad's words repeating in her head and just grabbed the two hundred

Martha Derthick’s Up In Smoke is a detailed look at federal regulation, legislation, and litigation through the lens of the tobacco industry. By providing a detailed chronology of tobacco regulation in the United States, Derthick is able to shed light on the centers of influence connected to the development of policy concerning nicotine and cigarettes. The narrative attempts to illuminate the relative power of industry lobbyists, health administrators, congressmen, and tort lawyers in these dealings. In particular, the book focuses on the power struggle between non-elected officials and private interests groups in determining regulation. Because non-elected officials and interest groups have no formal legislative power, their attempts to influence policy and regulation is often referred to as “subgovernment.”…
