Ashes By Pfeffer Analysis

Everyone is faced with a big decision in their life, but they always have to do what's best in order to move on. In the short story “Ashes”, Ashleigh is faced with one of these big decisions that will surely disappoint one of her parents. Despite that however, the whole story has already taken place, Ashleigh is having a flashback through her past remembering when her mom and dad divorced. In the story, Ashleigh ( A.K.A Ashes) talks about her dad and how heroic he is, but toward the end he tries to convince her to steal her mom's money from her teapot so he can pay off his debt. Ashes took the money from her mom’s teapot because her father's her hero, he encourages her to be anything in the world, and Ashes is everything to him. Ashes took the money because her father's her hero. In the short story “Ashes” the author stated,”He was always harder to hear when they fought”( Pfeffer 1). In “Ashes” Ashleigh’s dad says,” You’re the one-in-a-million girl”( Pfeffer 2). This quote shows the readers that there's only one, one-in -a-million girl to Ashleigh’s father and that girl is Ashleigh, one could assume that if he says she is one-in-a-million then that must mean that he loves her. Then he says this,” For a special date with my daughter? Of course I can…”( Pfeffer 2). After the quote says,”Of course I can” it continues on and says that he is broke, so obviously if he’s going out to eat while he’s broke then she must truly mean something to him. After that he says,” You’re ten thousand times better than I deserve, Ashes”( Pfeffer 3). This last quote proves that he must think that he doesn't deserve a daughter like Ashes, but why? Maybe it's because he knew that Ashleigh would do anything for him. She took the money because she knew that her dad truly loved her and that it would break his heart if she did not take/steal
