Sexuality is an integral part of our lives it encompasses who we are, what we believe, what we feel, and how we respond to others. It is something we learn at a very early age and is initiated in how we feel about our bodies and continues to affect us as we experience different emotions such as; compassion, intimacy, joy, love, touch, etc. People are considered within the elderly population when they reach the age of sixty-five (65) and higher with some exceptions at the age of sixty (60). This review will analyze previous studies and revisit how the perception on sexuality and older people is a misconception that is currently skewed based on the belief that the elderly are asexual beings.

According to a study conducted by Rheaume and Mitty (2008), the conclusion indicated that traditional stereotypes concerning ageing, intimacy and sexuality are being reevaluated. In essence, the perspective that is being developed states that there is no precise end date for when the desire for intimacy should occur. This has become a consecutive point of research as we continue to move into the 21st century. The research will be imperative to the study of gerontology because it covers areas that are sparse and provide an outline to improve future studies and diminish
