Focusing on the two main locations, Wooster Junior High School and Raybestos Memorial Field, these were known areas that kids play on that contained harmful waste. Young children are the most susceptible to be infected and get sick with these chemicals because of their hand to mouth contact and playing in the soil(PHA,96). In 1995 Wooster Middle school had the contaminated soil removed and capped so it was safe for use(EPA Superfund program, unknown). The ball field has had large security fences installed around the perimeter and has been closed since 1992. In 1993 there was a petition from the Stratford Health Department for the federal Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry to issue an official health advisory(History of Raymark, unk). Political and societal concerns became intertwined when the city needed funding to clean up the tainted grounds. Cleaning the lands where children play and families live were the largest focus of the community and the state of Connecticut. In 1990’s the EPA, a government agency, got involved in the community cleanup working with city and state resources they made the ultimate decision of adding the Raymark compound to the Superfund registry in 1995(History of Raymark, unk).
Sustainable Solution The proposed sustainable solution to getting rid of toxic waste and hazardous breathing conditions is finding new asbestos free alternatives for manufacturing automobile brake pads. Finding alternative materials to make brake pads with is sustainable because there are other materials that can withstand friction and heat, like asbestos. There are several successful alternatives that can be used so there won’t be any depleting resources or major health concerns surrounding the production of brake
